ok so question one:
On the back of the dimmer switch there is a circuit board with a place for
a light bulb. Does anyone know if the circuit board has power running
through it so that I can solder the light bulb to it?
I know I could check but I thought I'd ask first. I have a new dimmer
overlay and I need a light source now.
question two:
I have a gauge overlay. If the circuit board from the back of the dimmer
switch has power, can I also attach the power wire from the overlay to it,
hence controlling the overlay with the standard dimmer switch?

I can answer question one.... YES! The switch is the same as the Sunfire, which actually lights up. Unfortunately, there is nowhere for the light to shine thru on the Cavalier... so putting a light bulb in is pointless.
If you can get the stock overlay off.... you'll have to dremel out a hole for the light to shine thru... and even then, most overlays don't actually shine thru on the dimmer part.
You can score a wrecking yard Sunfires' dimmer switch bulb and just install it... I grabbed one but then ran into the problem of it not shining thru.

I got an overlay from blackcat customs for the dimmer.
Anyone know if I can plug the gauge overlay into the dimmer switch?

if it doesnt have a controller i would put it on a switched source, i ran my interior neons off of my dash lights so that when i turn on the headlights my neons kick on get a voltage meter or a fluke if you have access, DO NOT CROSS THE LEADS sounds simple but i blew 3 fuses testing this cause the probes kept slipping, anyone ever had to drive home with no heat, no interior electrics in the middle of winter with the windows fogged up so you have to keep the window down to clear it up or run into somethin? man that @!#$ sucks balls, so be careful, i beleive its the bottom wire thats hot but its been months since i was in the dash, i grabbed the power in lead so that i wouldnt have to deal with dimming my neons if i wanted my dash lights lower but thats just me, also alot of good grounds in that area to so have fun.

I read another post in here about the wires going up to the gauge cluster.
I think I could also tap into the wire which supplies the power for the cluster
and then I will be able to control the overlay with the dimmer switch.
Well it makes sense to me hehe.

Okay first of all, sorry for reviving this thread. The thing is that I'm the proud 2nd owner of a 1999 Z24 and I just took the dimmer switch out to replace the lightbulb that I thought was out... only to find what was mentioned previously: there is a light bulb socket but no bulb, and no place for light to shine through. I was like WTF???!!?? And then found this thread...
I guess what I'm wondering is will the sunfire "lighted" switch fit into the Cavy "non-lighted" switch slot, or do I hafta hunt down an overlay if I want a lit dimmer switch?

Yup what I did was get an overlay.
Now since the dimmer piece had no cutout, for the light to come through,
I jsut made my own with a dremmel.
Then I grabed a bulb and I attached it behind the switch. Attach it any way
you want. Tape, glue what ever.
As for getting power for the bulb, plen of wires back there, you can even
tap into the cig lighter.
The sunfire and cavalier switches are identical, except the Sunfire one is gray rubber, the Cavalier is black. (ok, darker gray, whatever). The only real difference is the absence of the light bulb on the Cavalier. The spot is there, there's just nothing in it. If you want it, I'll send you the bulb. It's a tiny piece... should make it ok in the mail
like I said earlier tho... unless you cut a hole and get an overlay like Wojtek did, there's nowhere for the light to shine on the cavalier. Sunfire has a different trim piece with a shine-thru bit.
