auto to manual look conversion help?
Friday, July 30, 2004 8:48 AM
I've read the posts about making your automatic look like a manual, but could someone please help me with a more "in depth" description about how to do it, I really want to try it but I'm still a little new to doing custom work and a little more help would be nice.

Turn your car off just as the stoplight turns green. Then restart it and floor it. That'll make everyone think you're a cool guy with a stick.
hey man, u could try to shorten the shifter and put a shifter nob on, and just finish it off by putting a "shift boot" at the bottom of your shifter.
my buddy did it but u gotta be careful if you get rid of the shift lock.
hope this helps
I was just playing around. Anyway, why is it that you like 'how manuals look'? Is it just the boot? Trying to hide the fact that you've got an automatic, even if it is just for cosmetic purposes, seems to me like putting on stickers advertising parts that you don't have. Love your auto, and work on stuff that really matters.
yeah i was kidding too--sorry to offend you at all-- i actually think the shift boot and shift knob looks kinda nice in an auto--a lot of cars come stock like that.
well in my opinion ... i couldn't agree with him more... the loose stick in the middle with a leather boot and a slick knob looks so much sleeker and sportyer then just a 1 foot tall rod poping out of a rectaqngular hole in the console with the automatic knob on the tip...i've seen ppl dress it up and it looked good... but from factory the whole shifter part of the automatic interior looks horible in my opinion.... mind you the stock knob on a stock manual is pretty shabby as well
hey man i wasnt kidding with my comment... i think it was just the way you asked the question, like gab said, the stock manual knobs are ugly as well. your question should have been "how can i go about dressing up my automatic to make it look more sporty" sorry i took it the wrong way i didnt mean to upset you, but i didnt understand the question. I was sure you wanted to be someone who puts a boot on an automatic and everytime they park they throw the E-brake up.... but as for dressing up an automatic i would suggest just shortening the rod and getting a nice auto knob. dont mess with the shift lock, the last thing you want to do is bump it into reverse when your going 70 on the highway. you can say you wont let that happen but the fact that it could seems just to risky to me. the boot is realy an opinion thing, i perfer mine without it, but i have seen some real nice looking autos with boots. I hope this reply was more helpful than my first. If you need to know how to shorten the rod, its simple, just cut (with a hacksaw or dremel) the rod to your desired height, but make sure you leave the yellow plastic stick on the inside the same height above the outer rod as it was before. (keep the same height ratios)

...something like this...

Hey, i was just wondering if, would you switch the whole center console, or just the panel around the shifter. I dont feel like cutting into my car, if that's required. I thought I could just pop that panel off of a manual and switch it with mine and put a boot in. Is it more complicated that that?

Yes just pop off the panel around the shifter and switch it with a manual one..
that way the boots fits right. and you don't have to pay for the whole consol

Ok, that helped. Now when buying a shift knob....I heard that you could just get a regular manual knob and just push the whole knob itself down to change gears. Is that possible or do I need to buy a shift knob with a button on it?

id buy a shifter made for an auto. i just dont like the idea or "rigging" your shifter. there are allot of nice shift knobs out there for autos. i love my momo.

Ok, I dont know why the hell alot of you people keep giving bad info.

To add a Manual look, all you need is a Boot, and a Manual knob. Its quite simple.

None of this, "shortening the stick" crap, No "Get another console" crap.

Its actually alot easier then that.

I did mine along time ago.

LMR: it just looks better shortened. If I were to do this, I'd definitely shorten that awful rod.

Thats fine, i just like how i can rest my arm on the armrest, and my hand sits comfortably on the knob.
