is this swap just a simple plug-up and go? or is there more to it than i think? im relle gettin tired of the way my stock gauge cluster looks and i certainly do like the 00-04 sunfire cluster.

edit: whoops... almost forgot. you might have to do the PASSKey re-learn (or whatever it's called).

thats definitly and a relief. one more question, once u do the swap and turn the car on will the odometer read the milage that is actually on the car?

for j-bodies 00+, the mileage is stored in the BCM, not the cluster, so yes.

i didnt have to do the passkey relearn....i have had my stock cavalier gauges, then the sunfire gauges, then the blackcatcustoms gauges, have yet to do the passkey thingy.... i may have just gotten lucky tho

95-99 Cav to Sunfire (or vice-versa) you need to re-pin the connector... but it's possible to swap. You will need to do a Passlock re-learn. Your mileage will be whatever is on the cluster you swap in, as the mileage is stored there.
00-05 Cav to Fire, plug & play.. no relearn necessary. You don't even need to turn the car off..
I was told by a wrecking yard that in the 00 to 05 , the mileage was stored in the cluster and not in the BCM.....is this true ???
According to GM, there is a theft code stored in the cluster. Apparently, this code needs to be matched with what is stored in the BCM.....

Let's see if I can sum this all up in one post.95-99 cluster controls PASSlock, R-code from key cylinder goes to cluster, cluster sends fuel password to PCM to start car. 00-05 cluster does nothing other than display stuff, the BCM does the PASSlock. So R-code from lock cylinder goes to BCM, then BCM sends fuel password to PCM to start car.
95-99 no Body Control Module (BCM), done by cluster. Mileage stored in cluster. Cluster and PCM need to be matched (you can do the re-learn if you've changed one or the other).
00-05, BCM controls PASSlock and stores mileage. You don't even need a cluster in the car. BCM and PCM need to be matched (again, you can do relearn)

00-05 there IS no theft code in the cluster. It's not even part of the PASSlock system. You don't even need a cluster in the car for it to run (i've driven mine with no cluster... or dash... it's kind of eery).
For ALL 2000-05 J-body cars... The lock cylinder sends a resistance code (R-code) to the Body Control Module (BCM), which sends the fuel password to the PCM to start the car. Nothing to do with the cluster. At all.
That is what a tech at the local GM dealership told me.....
A local GM dealership told me you couldn't do lots of things... including stuffing a 3.8L supercharged V6 into my Cavalier... but I did it anyway.
Like John has been saying, no relearn needed for 00+ cluster swaps. Plug and play. I've had my original cluster + a replacement in out numerous times, as well as throwing in a sunfire cluster, no relearn ever needed. I've run the car with no cluster.
No theft code in the cluster, no mileage in the cluster, nothing at all stored in the cluster (00+).
