I need to remove lower dash :(
Saturday, October 09, 2010 12:20 PM
Alright, so basically I am trying to get the main wiring harness out of my 99 cavalier. Unfortunetely I had an alarm installed by proffesionals, who did a really good job of tucking away all the wires. Unfortunetely I can't possibly figure out wtf they did because everything is tied, taped, loomed, tucked etc all over the place and I can't make out whats the alarm and what the regular harness. Only way I can see me figuring this out is if I pull the lower dash out so I can see/reach everything. I know its a pain, but it's what I've decided to do. The part under my windshield is cracked anyway, so atleast I'll be able to replace it once its out.

I've read the steering wheel needs to be pulled, so I'll have to rent the tool for that but is there anything else I will need? I know how to take the dash pad, bezel, cluster, radio and hvac out, but I've never gone farther than that. If someone could give me a good break down of whats needed or link to another thread I'd really appreciate it (couldn't find anything other that people complaining about how hard it is or how to remove the top part).

Of coarse right after I post this I notice that in the thread with the video of how to remove the bezel people explained what was needed to remove the lower part of the dash. Well if anybody has pictures or a really good how-to I guess that would be usefull. Otherwise this thread can just be deleted/ignored...

You will not be able to "replace" the cracked piece on your lower dash, since it is all one piece. Unless you buy the coverlay to cover it up or replace the entire dash.

I know that, but I am taking the entire thing out, thats why I said once its out I will replace it. By "it" I meant the entire dash.

I have a second cavalier I bought for parts, the dash isn't cracked in that one so I will be switching the two.

Lol I was debating not even putting those two stupid screws in. 2/3 cavaliers I have owned cracked on twice at the top, now that I have this one taken apart I can see the cracks lead right to the screws. I was thinking of just putting some foam to prevent rattling and leaving it unscrewed.

Anyway I got the dash out today, I don't see why eveyone makes such a big deal out of it. The only annoying part is disconnecting the stupid electrical connections.

If anybody needs pictures of this I can take pictures when I put it back together but its really not much harder than the bezel and dash pad, it just takes longer because you have to remove those parts first.

Yeah honestly the only part I struggled with was removing the bottom part of the plastic around the steering wheel. The stupid tilt lever was in that way and I had no idea how to disconnect it, until I realised the whole lever just screwed in. Whole thing took me less than 2 hours to figure out. If I had known what I was doing, I would say it could easily be down in an hour.

Funny story though, this whole thing wasn't necesary, turns out I don't need to touch any of the harness back there... Oh well... Atleast the dash can be replaced now.

The alarm was installed above the foot pedals to the bottom of the dash?

The wires? Most of it yes, but it was tucked way up there with zipites/tape and I couldn't get a good enough view of it to see what was going on. Unless you mean the actual alarm horn, thats in the engine bay. Nothing was physically attached to the dash itself, just behind it and I couldn't get a good view without taking out the dash.

You can do it my way and instead of getting the tool to remove the steering wheel, pull the whole column, much easier, IMO...

The tool costs about $20, and took me about 5 minutes to get the wheel off. Thats easy enough for me.
