Sloppy Tilt
Monday, August 23, 2010 3:06 PM
My car is a 99 Z24 and I have owned it for nearly 10 years now.

When I bought the car, I adjusted everything so it was comfortable for me. I even wired the seat in place so it couldnt be moved by anyone.

I have the tilt set so the coloum is straight and dont move it.

Ive been noticing for a while now that the tilt seems to be getting sloppy. I can grab the wheel at 3 and 9 and move it side ways, I can do the same at 6 and 12 and it will move up and down.

Seems like the tilt mechanism is worn down to me. Just seems weird that it can wear down when its not even being used. I pulled the airbag off to make sure the steering wheel retaining nut hadnt worked loose but its tight.

Anyone have this issue? Can I get parts to fix it?

Thanks for the help,
Thomas

just get a new column from the yard, pretty easy to change out. Ive converted plenty of j cars from standard to tilt columns.

I had the same problem as well, i had 200k + on the car though.. there are two pins, about the size of dimes on each side. They hold the wheel to the colum. They need to be tapped in, mine were comng lose, i tapped them in a couple times it was good for awhile, eventually they go in a dn out and dont hold for crap, so i tapped them inand slapped a bunch of jb weld over them and sold the car, I had it come apart a couple times and the whole damn wheel goes crazy, can be unsafe at a high speed or windy road.. In short, you need a new column

there are also 4 inverted torx head screws that hold the tilt assembly to the column. my 97 Z had those 4 bolts loose

I've never had an issue with mine and it's a tilt also.
Once I set it years ago, left it that way and never ever move it.
It's solid as a rock with no issues.
I also know that the more you actually use it the more wear and tear on the tilt mechanism. They will fail in time.
Good luck man.
