Just looking for some quick info before i tear into my dash...
Every picture i have seen on here (and most normal cars!) have the radio above the hvac controls.. mine however is reversed.. with anything in the cup holder blocking the radio...
Now i picked up a new deck to replace the stocker.. and im wondering if i'll have any issues swapping locations and putting the hvac controls where the radio is now and vice versa.. (size looks the same, im sure there is a few inches of slack in the wiring)
Im new to this car.. and its freezing outside..lol.. so i'd rather know what im getting into before i rip it all out...
Thanks!
It seems someone has swapped these already? I remember having my hvac by the cupholders, and the radio higher. If someone has changed this then it should be an easy reversal?
FOR SALE
yeah.. looks like the hvac controls are single DIN size.. and the stock radio is double din...
so in theory,, I should be able to buy an din adapter for the hvac controls and find a way to mount the new deck in the single din slot..
looks like alot of other jbodys have it the way i want.. and i cant imagine they are entirely different components so size shouldnt be an issue...
guess i'll find out one way or another... lol
not my car, but thats the set up i have (for whatever reason)
whereas, i want it the normal way... (i know its a different car, but the layout remains the same)
so im wondering if i buy the adapter to fit in the new deck, could i not put the hvac controls into it instead and mount the deck where they used to be
You could. but just remember that the pre 2000 deck is din and a half, not double, for when u get ur adapter. And ur gunna have some fun rerouting wires, and might have to extend a couple. Im not sure but it shouldnt be a huge deal tho
i figure the harness is more then likely (no clue yet, like i said.. new to this car) below where it sits, so dropping it a couple inches should actually give me more slack in the wires...
Im more concerned with getting the deck in there securely.. I doubt GM followed a standard din size when making the hvac unit so im guessing screw holes wont be there... tearing the entire dash apart would fix that problem but im hoping to avoid all that work.. lol... at least until it warms up..
and yeah.. i noticed that din and a half when looking around the internet.. lol... i probably would have missed that, and i doubt the boys at futureshop would have corrected me.. lol.. thanks
You need to swap to a 00+ cavy dash.
That is your easiest way otherwise there will be ALOT of cutting and time spent for very little benefit.

Alexis: Dustin, you're ghey, lol. I am better. I have tits, and tits rule all.
no doubt.. it doesnt bother me enough to deal with that...
Thanks guys
you do realize there were two different Cavalier dash right? 1995-1999 with the radio below the hvac controls, and also 1- 1/2 din size. 2000-2005 cavaliers had a the radio above the hvac control and were all double din size.
The first pic is the 95-99 Cavalier, the second pic is a 03(?) sunfire dash lol.
Swap an 03 cavi dash in and call it done. I assume you have a cavalier, you have nothing listed in your profile.
It says cav in the title so I assume he has a Cav. And the second pic is an +03 Fire.
having a cav doesnt mean squat.
yeah.. I have a 99 z24.. and i know the 2nd pic is a sunfire.. it was just for a quick example of layout..
I also realize im talking about 2 different dash layouts, But the question was just, can i rig the deck in where the hvac controls are easily..
I can do it the way it is, without swapping dashboards without any doubt... it will physically fit (at least from i can see and measure), but with no way to properly mount it and with the car in my freezing driveway, im not about to start tearing and fabing up mounts etc just for something this simple... i'll tackle that in the spring among other projects.. lol
I just figured by the stuff you guys were doing in this forum, someone would have come across what i wanted to do so i was looking for some info before i got into it.. guys are moving them to the center console, i just want it moved down 6 inches.. lol
But 03 dash would be the easiest way to go? i have access to a couple cav's so thats not a problem
any 00+ cavy dash will work for you.
You will also need the radio bezel since they are different also.

cool... Thanks for the info on that.. got a buddy at a wreckers, getting a 00+ dash wont be a problem...
since mine is cracked from the last owner anyways, thats probably the best option..
i recommend going that route.
Keep in mind that the 95-99 cluster is a different size than the 00-05 cluster... so trying to fit the cluster into the wrong dash is going to require some cutting.

yep. lots of work
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
