why doesnt a 97 gauge cluster work in my 99?

i purchased a gauge cluster from the junkyard and the gas gauge stays at full. i tried swapping my fiance's cluster into my car and the same thing happened! (also a 97 cluster) Then for @!#$s and giggles i put the cluster i bought at the junkyard in her car and everything works.. what is the difference between the two besides the digital odometer?!

you 99 has a digi odometer???

hmm.

I got a cluster from a junker that came from a 4 speed car with a tach (mine is a 3 speed currently, but one day thats gonna change)....I put it in and car only run for 1 sec...then stall and die.

there is a thing on here that shows you how to get pass the passlock/ani theft system....its a relearnign thing....have you tried that yet?

its about boring....I hope you have a video game on your phone you like playing (its what I did) cuz you be stuck in your car for about 10 minutes not being able to do anything....but it worked for me.

basically start car, it dies withing 1 sec, leave on, DO NOT TURN KEY AT ALL! Wait till the theft thingy stops blinking, wait another 10 seconds...turn car off (dont remove key yet!),,,,,start car again....voila....all my stuff work and car ran perfect after.

its sounds to me like your sending unit for the fuel level is toast.

Not the clusters.

not possible. on the original cluster (with the digital odometer) the fuel gauge works. and i checked the wire coming off the sending unit while my friend put gas in the car and the resistance was changing like it should. i originally thought it was the sending unit also.

and today i checked all the wires from my girlfriends 97 (on the connector for the cluster) and compared them to mine and they are all the same.

also, my car is a manual, and the cluster i have tried to use are for an auto... would that matter?

heck yes that matters, the auto ones are probably way different, get a manual one for sure. im no expert on this but i am pretty sure the manual one would work and thats why.

the problem is the cluster, you can't put 95-96-97 mechanical odo in your 99 cavalier, try find a 98-99 cavalier cluster with digital odo , i already put 97 cavalier cluster and the fuel lever gauge was full all time

It is the cluster as stated above. You must use one with a digi odometer.
