Cluster Issue. ODO light not working
Monday, November 02, 2009 11:15 AM
I have a 2004 Cavalier. The other day I look at my gauges to check my fuel level and I notice my odometer light isnt on. So I turn my lights on and all the other gauges light up. I can see that the odometer is still reading correctly. Lucky me, I have a new cluster sitting in my closet which I was planning on putting in anyway. So I take apart the dash and replace the cluster. Turn the car on. Same thing. No odometer light and all the other lights are working fine. Odometer is still reading correctly. I can also see that it will change from odo to trip miles. Any clue what my problem could be? By the way, I checked all my fuses. They are fine. Also, called four dealerships in the area. None of them had any idea. They just wanted $500 to replace it. LOL

yea, this has been an issue since 2000 when they went to the newer style clusters with the 7k tach

Same problem here. I was going to rip the dash out and check the power and ground wires. Sometimes if im hauling some a in 2nd and shift to 3rd the fuel side light will come on and stay on for a few starts. Then it will be back to not working

My 03 sunfire did that when it got destroyed in an accident, just from the impact so It must be a single incandescent bulb for the display but i know it would definetly be soldered in there.
I beleave there are some threads about taking these apart to add new guage designs and once you have it apart should be just a matter of soldering in a new bulb.

the newer clusters are alot harder to take apart without messing them up.. I've never done it but I've talked to ppl about getting blue LEDs soldered into mine and they all have said that its a total PITA

my cluster currently has half the tach out and half the temp gauge.. I can still see everything, but its obvious that something's not lit up.. I'd worry about it but I'm getting a BCC cluster anyways

Smack your hand down on the dash pad just above the gauge cluster. It should make the odometer light up again. This used to happen to me in my '02 Sunfire GT and doing this always worked for me.

Actually it started in 98 with the introduction of the digital odometer.

In 98-99 its a simple bulb replacement. Not sure on the 00+ clusters tho.

Actually i believe it isn't a wiring or bulb problem at all. I have been able to duplicate a similar situation like this by disconnecting the power lock switch in the doors. Also, on a solus/modis scan tool you can look up error codes for the IPC, however i haven't had a chance to scan while the the problem was occuring. The next time i have access to one i'll try to re-duplicate the problem and see what it says. I *think* the condition is basically a CEL for the IPC or maybe BCM
