I know there's a sticky or post somewhere but I cannot find it. I want to repaint my car's carpet only and no plastic pieces? I want it black. The main reason is because my trunk is very badly stained with multiple things when I got the car. How do I go about this? I have heard that Duplicolor car carpet spray paint works the best from another post but I am not sure how to go about painting the rest of the inside. The trunk should be fairly simple because there's no plastic to paint near? Do I just mask the plastic pieces off of the interior or can I take the entire carpeting out? Which is easier? Does the car stink really bad after you paint it? Will it always have a paint smell? Suggestions and pics are very much welcome. Thanks!

hey i died my carpet with just fabric die from wal mart i mixed one full pack in about 1l spray gun and just sprayed i wiped down my plasic after with hot water and came right off and looked great i got the trick off my dad he done it for years with just a spray bottle but me being me i wanted to use a spray gun its doesnt wear off olny in heavy areas like were water builds up in the winter, sait and stuff but now i just do it every spring keeps it fresh i also done my back dash and my trunk and my head liner i hope this works out for you oh yeah its all black

But back to the OP's question - the Duplicolor vinyl and fabric spray does work well as far as coverage goes, but do expect it to wear off and lighten in spots over time. You could tape all your edges, but I think it would really be easier to take out the carpet and spray it out of the car. Just unbolt the seats and center console, and pop off the plastic door sills and you should be good to go.
Personally if you want something long lasting, buy a replacement carpet. I purchased mine from stockinteriors.com, I forget the price but it was less than $200 shipped. Then just spray your trunk carpet to match.
wow thats for the link. 134 shipped new carpet. probably the best price and quality site ive seen so far for carpets. they usually want over 200 just for a stupid piece of carpet. i will definately think about that. thanks a lot man.

I'm extremely happy with the carpet I got from stockinteriors.com, fits like stock!
I would use the Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric, it should last a little longer than your interior carpet since it doesn't see as much weathering/wet shoes, etc, but I would imagine everyone once and a while it may need touch up.
You can go the fabric dye route as well, but again, depending how much you use the trunk that may need some touching up as well. I'd stick to the Duplicolor, it's cheap so it's not a big waste of cash if you need to buy more and touch up.

How is the quality of the carpet there. I'm planning on ordering mine from them, but I have heard it's not as heavy and doesn't have the same backing as stock.
My old roommate bought some from there...get the nicer version of the carpet (the Ultra Plush-Cut Pile) and it's just like stock but looks better imo. The only thing it's missing is a mass-layer backing, which you can add (and come to think of it, I'm pretty sure we don't have this stock anyways lol).
I just ordered my yellow carpet from there and the product is amazing...they offer samples of carpet. I got it within the week...ships great and I spent $225 for the mass back and neon yellow carpet. Yeah, you have to do the cutting for the console and the seat bolts but if you have your old carpet its easy to follow the pattern. Yes most J-bodys come with mass backing carpet to lower noise from the outside. Def go with Stockinteriors.com!!!

Why paint when you can probably go to the junkyard and get replacement trunk carpet for cheap and in better shape than what you now have.
That's what I did with my Cavy and it all looks brand new in the trunk now.
And even though I've replaced the main carpet with black ACC carpet, I'm still using the grey trunk carpet with no issues of color clash.
Seriously though, painting everything is not where it's at by any means. There are better ways around solving problems with carpet or interior color than painting everything.

gotta agree, just spend the cash for new carpet up front. well worth the money. and then check the junkyards or as quick said, just glue non-backed carpet over your stock carpet and it will look brand new as well.
