Neon tube problem
Monday, June 22, 2009 1:35 PM
I bought a set of blue neons of ebay. The set came with 2-6" neon tubes and a box. The box has 2 inlets for the neons to plug in to and on the other end of the box the the hot wire and ground wire runs out of it. I cut the plug off one of the neons so i could put it wereever i wanted it and when i huked the neon up it would not work with out the box. Is there a way that i can get it to work with out using the box cause the plug ins on the box have a short in them and it will only light up half the neon tubes. Im trying to explain this the best way that i can.

Most likely, the box is a transformer of sorts which means that the lights will not work at all without a box. You are probably going to need a new transformer.

^^ that. also, you usually cant extend the wires on the neon side without adverse effects. congratulations, you've just ruined your neons.

ive run a set on mine some time ago i got from my buddy when he got a new set and i did straight wires no box nothing. but if they are leds ull need the transformer or if they are pattern style. only straight single color on/off function u stand the chance of straight wire. so gl.

If the box is a transformer, then no, the neons will not work without the box. Th transformer would be required to ensure that the neons get the right amount of voltage.

Personally, I have never seen neons that came with a box or separate transformer. Take a picture and post open, maybe then we can see exactly what you are working with.

This thread is exhibit A of why I went with LED as opposed to neon interior tube lighting. LEDS generally cost less, aren't as fragile, use much less power and have more flexibility (my tubes can do seven different colors and 22 different settings, including multiple fades from one color to another, oscillating, pulse to sound etc.) You can also easily splice in extra cable if necessary (which in a J really isn't necessary, most good LED four tube kits come with six feet or more of cable per tube, which is usually more than enough to put things where you want them without having to add cable).

Here's the set I got off ebay:
