what is this piece called?

When i turn the selector for the heat (where to blow) well if its all the way to teh left like on feet and i turn it all the way to the right, defroster, the little flap under the passanger airbag that opens and closes makes a really loud noise when it moves. what is that called so i can replace it?

If you're talking about the flap inside the air passage, I believe it's called a damper. There are a handful of them, so you'll have to be specific when asking for it. There's one right in that area that controls if you are getting outside air or just recirculating, and there is another one that directs air to the cooling or heating coils. I thought the one that directed the exiting air to your feet was behind the radio, but I may be wrong.

The thing that moves the "flap" is actually an air controlled solenoid with a diagram in it and its called an actuator

I think the flap is commonly referred to as an HVAC air door but its been so long I dont remember for sure... they should know what your talking about though...
