What vinyl are you painting?
What year is your cavi?? I pulled the console and one door from an 02 cavi the console and door panel was molded hard plastic. I'll put up some pics later of them. but prep, prep ,and more prep. bulldog (adheision promoter) prime scotch brite paint use a HVLP in an enclosed enviroment with good quality paint. Then a light coat of clear.
Those are both plastic....
What I used on my doors when I did them was sand the living piss out of the plastic till it was smooth, then I wiped them clean using paint thinner, finally I used Krylon Fusion for plastics. In my experience that stuff sticks to plastic very well, however colors are limited.
Just sanding and not using a technique that incorporated primer to help smooth it was a lot more work, but I'm happy with the finished product.
For the parts on the car that are vinyl (ie. dash pad and armrest) I know most people have cut the vinyl then peel/scraped off all excess then glassed it.
the upper part from my 98 door panel is a kind of vinyl, RustOleum vinyl and fabric works fine for that part, dries quikly and sticks very good
Mine is a 99 and has the vinyl on the top of the door panels too. After 99 they are molded plastic which is a bitch to prep without using an adhesion promoter. but i basically did as sndsgood stated but I used the paint left over from my exterior, use a HVLP!! you will like the results better. Try cleaning it with degreaser first then scotchbrite, afterwards clean it with something like denatured alcohol, that tends to not be so harsh on plastics or vinyls.
here are the old pictures of my door
im wanting to repaint the bottom better for a fiberglass look and i need an idea for the top
for the bottom half of your door. take a sander and sand all of the texture off till its as smooth as a babies butt, then spray it with a hvlp gun, not a spray can.
for the top, use a vynal dye if it is vynal. if its the years with the plastic i would go with a contrasting color with a satin or flat finish to make it look more like a vynal finish, or do the same as the bottom half and have it look like a fiberglassed piece.
