Replacing airbags
Monday, April 06, 2009 1:36 PM
Hey guys, i just got my girlfriend a great deal on a cavy, but it needs the airbags to be replaced. How do i disarm the driver airbags? and then can i just put in a whole new steering wheel with the airbag in it in its place? Or is it easier to just put a new airbag in?

just unclip it. theres a harness on the back of the bag, unscrew it from the wheel flip it over and unclip it. Its not guna bite ya like you think lol i thought the same when i did this, i think i unhooked the battery just in case, it was afew years ago.

So is it easy to put one in then? I have never crashed any of my cars so i havent had to deal with the airbags. Do you have any write ups u used?

Just put the bag in.. you don't need to "disarm" the airbags... just remove the existing one and install the new one. I'm not familiar with the specific platform but it should be pretty damn easy.

no you HAVE to "disarm" the airbags. you have to unhook the battery for 15 minutes. and then your good to go. at least for a gm you do. if you fail to do so. and unhook and rehook the airbag up the slightest voltage spike could set the airbag off.

No power is sent to the squib unless a variety of sensors read certain parameters. You do not have to "disarm the airbags."

I worked at Takata's R&D US Headquarters (#1 airbag producer in the world).
