WHAT IS MAXIMUM OFFSET FOR MY J-BODY?
Monday, November 02, 2009 7:48 AM
I've been looking into buying some WRX or STI wheels to throw on my 05 sunfire.

I see lots of 17X7 5X100s, however the offset's usually +48 or in the neighbourhood.

Will that fit my sunfire properly?what if the rim's 17X8 w/ a +48? or 18's?

I know what the regular offset is for my car 35 - 42mm. But what about beyond that?

Please help!

Listening as well, I heard yes 48 offset will fit. I need that much I think to clear my Baer calipers without spacers.

i'm gonna guess a x8 wide rim by 48mm offset would rub on the strut! i would not go wider than a x7 rim. the tire size would play in as a factor as well!

k, n00b question... higher offset means further INto the wheel well? or further out? like would a 45 stick out further than a 35?

I am running a 48mm offset on my Moda R6's. They're basically made for Vdubs. lol.

With stock brakes, they fit fine and clear the fenders, but rub the inner fenders on hard turns just slightly.

With SSBC rears, the quarters HAD to be chopped and welded (rear) and rolled in the front. I wouldn't dare to try and tuck with these + the brakes.

I am running 225/45/17 tires.

Good luck.

Having a lower positive offset number means the wheel will stick out more.

My old Rota Boosts were 48mm offset and were either 7.5" or 8" wide with a 225/45/17 tire. No problems here. I bought them off Darkstars who had them on the GTC before he got Traklites.

alright, have a n00b question also. I understand the rim measurements and now the offset thanks to KFLO, but what does the number for the tire mean? For example "225"

if a guy says he's runnin a 225/45/17, does that mean that the tires are 225, the offset 45, and the rims a 17"?

un-confuse me please

225 would designate the width of the tire in millimeters. So that would equate to a tire being 225mm wide or approximately 9 inches wide.
The 45 in the tire sizing would say that the sidewall height is 45 percent of the 225mm width while the 17 is the rim diameter.
That's your standard tire sizing that you're seeing with the 225/45/17 on the sidewall.
The offset is never mentioned in tire sizing but is usually located on the backside of the rim letting you know the offset of the rim.
Hope that answers your question.

i knew i was going to get hit with this one year they had the 5x100 lug pattern. so yes 2004 and only 2004 sti had the 5x100 the rest were 5x114. it hit me when i was at work the next day about the 04 being 5x100 because my friend that has the wrx and i were discussing up grading our brakes to the sti brembos and the fact we just both bought a new set of wheels that were 5x100. i do know the hub bore is to small to just bolt on to the j-body and has to be bored larger. keep that in mind.

yup you got that correct. my first set of rims were from an 03 wagon. rotas fitted for his wagon. i had to use spacers to clear the hub.
