Can I run a 185/70/14 on my stock 14" stellies(195/70/14) for the winter. Im not really sure how tire measurements work. I have found some nexan sp? winter tires on sale and want to get a pair if they will work alright and not mess with my speedo.

Thanks

The middle number (70) is an aspect ratio. It's how big the side wall is compared to the tread. On the stock tires and the tires you want to buy it's 70 percent. So the side wall on stock tires is 136.5mm or 5.37 inches. The tires you want to buy its 129.5mm or 5.1 inches. Overall diameter of stock is 24.74 inches. Overall diameter of the new tires are 24.2 inches. I'm not sure by how much but it will mess with you speedo. When changing tires you typically want to stay within half an inch of overall diameter.

Yes, you can 185/70/14 on the stock 14 inch steelies on the Cavalier and Sunfires. My Cav was those exact measurements on my tires and had no problems.... though I need new tires within a few months.

According to this...

... your speedo will be 2.271% too fast or you'll be goin' 60 when your speedo says 61 so you'll be fine.

you will want 185/75R14's will work out to roughly the same diameter as your 195/70R14 and not throw anything (speedo) out at all. technically, it will be out 0.2 of an inch in overal diameter, but thats nothing.

185/70R14 would put you out about 0.8 of an inch. thats not bad... but if you havent purchased either set yet, get the 185/75R14's. if you already have the 185/70's then i would rock them. there is usually next to no difference in price of the tires.

yeah thats what i got for snow tires as well. i would do it, and theyre right the 185-75-14's are closer but the 185-70-14's will work no prob.
