So for those that have done this. Whats the procedure?
Scuff up with light grit sandpaper, then prime and paint?
Tips please.
I am doing this on a set of 17's I just bought off a guy too. Would love some tips and pointers. I got one done but it's really hard to get the paint to stick to the lip where the tire/rim meet. Like when I get the new tires put on the rims I am scared the paint is gone flake or scratch off. I can't seem to get the aluminum scuffed enough to get the paint to bond to it. I sanded the inner lip twice now and repainted it.

A durable paint job is about 90% prep and the rest is paint and technique. I like to take a dual action sander with a very fine grit (>1000) to it and then go by hand. Clean it up thoroughy, Im talking degreaser, soap and water, water, solvent (alcohol, acetone). Wheels are difficult because @!#$ is always hitting or being flung at them, so multiple coats is also key (not HEAVY coats). If you're using spray paint, follow the instrucions for recoat times. I used Duplicolor Wheel Paint, and there scratch/filler primer.
If your doing the same wheels as me, I just scuffed it as much as I could til the wheels turned like a whitish colour, then 1 coat of primer, 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear.
a good paint job is about 95% prep and 5% paint. I should know i paint for a living. getting paint to stick all depends on what the material is you are trying to paint over. if its old paint, or old (dirty) clear coat or the bare metal. I would suggest any form of blasting (plastic media, or light grit sand blasting) over sanding anyday. then clean it well ( water rinse, then acetone (dip if u can) then blow dry it with your FILTERED air, then maks and paint away...
