Just wanted to say hello. a newbie at this forum
I just purchased a 96 cavalier for my son. his first car. We want to change to a different set of wheels, right now they are 15 inchsteel wheels with hubcaps. We want to go to a 16 or possibly 17 inch. I was wondering what will fit, what won't. My son doesn't really care if they are 15 or 16 inch rims, just want some nicer ones. What are the pros and cons of the different sizes?
Also, while I have everyones attention on the above matter, what is the best tire combo for the above?
Thanks in advance
Rick
17" is the probably the best compromise between size and driveability. You'll want 225/45 or 215/45. Both will keep the speedo within 1% accuracy, it just depends on if you want more sidewall or more of a low profile look . 16" and 15" almost always looks small and most people end up regretting the purchase.
Don't worry about rough roads or ride quality. I've had my setup for a year: I've yet to damage them on rough roads and the ride is no harsher than when I had my 15" steelies.
Thanks for the reply. Do you know what rims fit the 96 Cavalier? I was thinking the 16 would look fine, but 17 would probably do better. I was not wanting it to bottom out. Thanks in advance.
16 and 17 inch rims will fit. most front wheel drive cars have the same offset
"I did it because I wanted to see what it would look like. You should be greatful that I even told you that it would look good. If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin
^^JBO is about not being that guy
you can fit all the way up to 20s with no problems. i personally feel 18s look the best on cavs but its all personal opinion. if you want 17s thats fine. like mentioned something with a 225/45/17 or 215/45/17 tire will work. as for the rim itself look for something around a 7 or 7.5" wide wheel with an offset anywhere from 38mm to 45mm. just make sure the bolt pattern for the wheel is 5x100.
remember if you dont lower the car also it will look really jacked up and imo looks goofy. if you want you could always find a cheap set of z24 wheels in your area which is a 16" rim.
17's and 18's are your best bet. and as long as you get somehting with a 5x100 bolt pattern and 7-8" width you'll be fine. check out the sticky at the top of the wheel/tire forum for more info.
