1) 205/40/17 is wayyy too small. that is the correct size for a honda
2) 225/40/17 is also too small
3) you want either a 215/45/17 or a 225/45/17
225/45R17 would be better than a 215/45R17 simply because it is closer to the stock height of the stock tires..
The tires you have are WAY to small.

i heard 215/45/17 is the closest to the stock 195/70/14

195/70R14 should be the same height as the stock 195/65R15 that I was running, and according to charts that I was looking at at work (I work at Goodyear) the 225's were .03" off of the stock tire height, and the 215's were even further off, I cannot remember how much more though.

Too wide for a 17x7, IIRC.

Well 215 is not the height of the tire, 45 is. 215 is the width. I prefer 215/45/17's. 225's make the rims look to small.
FU Tuning
215/45-17 for a little lower profile. 225/45-17 for a little more width but higher sidewall. Like said above, will make wheel look smaller.
Both are very close to stock size, neither are exact.

The 45 is the aspect ratio of the width of the tire.
Cause if the tire was 285/45/17 the tire would be taller then the 215/45/17. I just thought I would let you know the right way to say it.
so, y'all are sayin' that the 225/45 is better than the 225/40 because of the outer diameter difference? If he's got 205/40's on there now (too narrow and too small), maybe he has clearance issues b/c he lowered his car too much...? I use 205/50-16 tires on my stock wheels with no problems...
Anyway, I would go with the 225 section tires over the 215's for the wider footprint.
LD9 F23 FTW!!
if he is worried about rubbing, then he should get a 215 tire. when i was on coilovers and bags, i never had a clearance problem with 17s or 18s
225/45/17 for sure

Not to jack the thread here, but what size would good for a set of 18X8 rims? In order to keep the same total hight and not have to adjust the speedo?
It's a 04 cavalier btw.
Thanks!!

Anyways, you'd want 225/40/18. You can go larger or smaller but I believe that's the closest you'll get to the original size.
And once and for all, 215/45/17 or 225/45/17 are the optimal sizes for 17" inch rims to keep the speedo within 1 mph of your actual speed.
Let'em flame...I searched.. how do you think I found this thread? Been around since 99... I looked all over for that old rim upgrade calculator that was around..I used that when I got my rims for my old cavi...hell that was like 7 years ago!

I've got 235/45R17 tires available... these wouldn't fit on a 17X7 rim?

I had an 02 cavi lowered with Eibach Pro kit springs and KYB AGX struts with 215/45/17 tires, had no problems, tires were really close to the strut but didn't rub at all
forgot to mention my stock wheels were 16"
Im gonna bring this back from the dead. I am looking into runing a 235/40/17. i've been told i will not have problems with rubbing. I read thesticky, and there is no mention of a 235 tire...imust add, my wheels are 17x17.5

you shouldn't have a problem with rubbing, since you're running the Gravana coilovers. the rubbing issue comes from the spring perch. since you don't have those, you should be okay. keep in mind how much you're lowered. there's still a chance of rubbing on the fenders.
