I'm leaning towards the I don't think so side, it's the rim width that I'm not sure of. You may be able to do it though, do some more searching on here and see if anyone has done it.

That's almost 7" of backspacing. I seriously doubt you'll be able to mount that wheel at all. With coilovers, you might have a better chance, but if you just have lowering springs, I'd put money on it that the spring perch would interfere.

What about using wheel spacers? By the way, they're Yokohama Super Advan Racing Ver 2s

Now that I look at it, I would either have to run the 17x8.5, or use spacers that conver my bolt pattern to 5-114.3

I would go with the 17x8.5, then you wouldn't have to worry about wheel spacers.

no way in hell.

go with a 17x8.0 and 48 mm offset. if you get strut rubbing issues, then get a 5mm spacer. you can run a 235 tire with this.

I was going to run a 245/40r17, I used to work in tire shops and put a 195/65r15 next to a 255/40r15 and they were about the same height, so I figure the 245's would fit. I am planing on swapping to the TEIN SS with pillowball uppers anyway, just because I'm planning on doing Time Attack in this car, as well as drive it every day on the street.

i think your gonna have major rubbing issues. thats a wide tire and people with a 225 wide tire have some problems rubbing

I'm quoting myself to show that I'm willing to work to make them fit, be it with spacers, or custom flared cf fenders in the front. I'm just trying to find out what offset I should go with, as I can order custom offsets. By the way, these rims are almost $700 each.

Best thing to do is to figure out how much backspacing you can have. The best way to do that is to take off a wheel, and have the car sit as much as possible as it would with the wheel on, so that the suspension is compressed as normal. I have done this by putting a second floor jack under the ball joint before.

Once you get that done, take a straightedge and hold it against the hub face, then measure to the closest thing that would interfere. I'm betting the spring perch will be it. After you have that measurement, you can figure out the ideal offset to go with. If you want to post your backspacing or PM me, I'll figure it out for you if you like.

I'm guessing that you're going to want somewhere around 30-35mm, but it's best to figure it out.

I just went on a miata sit, via a link, and found out that the 245/40's are actually shorter than the stock 195/65R15 that my car came with, 255/40R17 are the same diamiter.
Quiklilcav, right now my car is mostly stock, with the exception of the Koni suspension(which used the stock strut tube and spring mount in the front), Prothane bushings, intake, gutted cat, weld on Megan Racing muffler, and gutted interior, so the measurements shouldn't be too much differant than stock. I am going to use 15 mm wheel spacers from Mackin just to convert the bolt pattern so I can run the 9" wides. Wait, whats the bolt pattern for the Cobalt SS? I just thought I could swap parts from the SS onto my Sunfire, gaining bigger front brakes and disc brakes for the rear.

You can not just swap parts from the Cobalt. If you use 15mm spacer/adapters, you'll probably be fine with the 45mm offset.
You are definitely going to have to flare your fenders, though, as they are going to stick out like crazy, particularly in the front.

I figured as much. You can't use the hubs from the SS at all?

What do I have to do to install Cobalt SS parts? I know it has a differant bolt pattern, which I want, but what else is stopping me?

please... just stop for a second, and look around this site...

a 9 inch wheel is not going to gain you ANYTHING in performance, especially if you have to start using adapters, and spacers and overly stretched tires to make them fit...

A cobalt has almost nothing in common with a j...

You would probably be better off with a decent set of 8 inch wheels (cost effective), good rubber, and look into the N-W-F front break swap... you could also d the n body IRS in the money you would save from trying to hack your car to hell to make those wheels fit...

It would be less work, and a much better value for your money...

of course its not gonna gain anything in performance.lol but at least i can say it fit. lol. and i had them on. kinda wierd that people keep posting if it will fit, but if they look at mine i can tell you that a 17x9 is possible. of course you probably wont gain any performance. but looks i must say i like the way they look. my preference was always to find a 16x8 or 16x9. i just like the way it looks. i dont race my Cav. i just like the way it looks and it was my first car. i have a project that i will race in the future if i want to. and that a 1972 celica with 13x9 inch wheels lol.

I have to ask... why not Trak Lites with Eagle F1's or Pirelli Zero's?

I will gain grip, and thats what I want. A 245/40r17 is a lot wider that the tires I have now, and since I'm going to race in Time Attack, I need all the grip I can get. I found a shop to widen my fenders, so I am not worried about clearence issues.
As for the Trak Lites, its been done, plus I plan on running an R compound tire. This car will be for competition and street use. Stop telling me what I can't do, and start helping me do this the way I want to, as this is my car, not yours.

dude chilax a little click the link I postead, if you really want to do this part of the point in breaking the limits everyone else has, is doign the work to back it up. That link is the most usefull for going to wider rims trust me from experience, I did my own and helped vince chose his for his car (big poppa) mine are 9.5" his are 10" in the rear.

so, really, all I will need to do is roll my fenders? I can get that done at RPM in Richmond VA for $50 a fender.

no you will need more the that, you will need to cut like an inch bigger fender arch and flare the whole car

Re: 17x9 45mm offset

I did tell you what you CAN do to gain performance...

I WAS trying to help, since you said it was NOT for show, I was just trying to help you use that money to have a all around package that would out perform spending a rediculous amount of money on rims that you would have to over stretch a tire on to get to fit.... What do you think will happen when you take a turn to fast and now your sidewall of the tire is touching the ground?

If you would have said I want a 9 inch wide wheel and a widebody for show reasons I would have told you how you COULD do that...

Since you want to be a little boy now and get all butt hurt I'll stay out of it... Make sure you post pics and skidpad differences after your done so I can laugh and say I told you so..
