Baer brakes and 18" rims
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 7:04 AM
I installed Baer brakes this weekend and the valve stem on my tires are tagging the caliper and grinding down. has anyone else had this problem?

on 18s?

what is the offset of the rim

i believe the offset was 42mm

valve stems go out... I can't see how they could possibly hit the valve stem.

the problem is fixed. i went and got new, shorter valve stems installed. anyone have any recomendations on how to mend the scratches in my caliper now?

wow your valve stem sits far back in the rim. only way to really get rid of them is to sand then down then polish the caliper, or a good rubbing compound might do the trick.

I never seen a valve stem sit far back like that before... weird.

You could send those Baer brakes to me, and put your stock ones back on. No more scratches.
Those brakes look amazing. Nice setup.

lol... umm... NO

this brake setup cost me more then my car did. and i have already sent the old spindles into baer for the core. i have to get used to how quickly i stop with the setup though. 12" in back and 13" up front, i stop before the dime now lol.

thanks for the replies everyone.

I've considered "big brakes" before, and even if I could afford them I've often wondered if they would really improve useful stopping power. Even with my semi-stock brakes, I can bring all four tires to their traction threshold (until ABS kicks in, anyways). Granted, if I do that more than a couple of times the rotors get heat soaked and things get dicey. My impression was that they tend to be either a) for show, or b) for improved heat storage and sustained braking.

Nice setup, in any case. I glad you were able to find some shorty valve stems.

they are much better for braking. bigger rotor and bigger caliper, you get more contact from pad to rotor when braking. not to mention they are 4 pistion calipers

That much makes sense, though I'd be interested in seeing some stopping distance numbers. Obviously the braking would be more consistent during race conditions, but I'd figure for a one-time brute force test, the cars tires would be the weak link.

Trust me Geeky... BIG BIG difference... i have NWF front brakes and the stockers stopped no where near as fast or as hard as the big brakes.... ive never been able to fade them either...

when i had my 14" rims the stock brakes were enough. but after i put my 18" rims on it took almost twice the distance to stop, and i figured i would get the big brakes before i get my supercharger.

the baer brakes are 2 pistons in the front and 1 piston in rear. the wilwoods are 4 pistons but i wanted ones that matched. also with the old brakes i could go 4 or 5 miles and the brakes would be so hot i could touch my rims and feel the heat radiate off of them. the other day i drove 4 miles got home and the neighbour decided to touch the rotors. surprisingly he didn't burn himself. the curved vanes in the rotors make a huge difference in heat dissipation.

now i just have to find a replacement for the blown bag on my steering wheel...
