so i just put a set of 17" rims on my car and had a few questions.
i cant fiqure out if my speedo is correct and cant find a police radar set up anywhere in my town lol. would the different tire size change the speedo?
and also when i come to stop it feels like something is rubbing when it hits 5 mph. now i have made sure there is plenty of wheel clearence is it just my brakes?
thanks
if your 17's have 40's tyre size, your speedo is correct.there's some thread here that says if you have 16s, your size should be 50s. it's a rule of 1 and 10. your stock is 14, tyre should be 70.
15" wheel= 60 tyre size
16" = 50
17" = 40 and so on...
that's what I read somewhere here. and for you brakes, either you need alignment or need to grind(torno)sand,(i don't know the term for it but it's done by a machine from tyre shops) your brake rotors. hope this helps.....
Go here, and don't listen to abdul, he doesn't read stickies either.
don't listen to him either.ask your friends which ones they are using, if it looks good for you, then try it on.BECAUSE you need to consider width of the wheel.some people buy wheels without looking at the width, then putting on wider tires.looks ugly. sorry toboggan, but i read stickies too.sometimes EXPERIENCE is better than theoretical....i've followed some websites computation and theoretical s#@$?t about tire size,before they have that stickies here but all i got was changin my wheels and tires. i look at my friends wheels with same wheel size and width, but all have different tire width, i just pick the one which looks good.IF you have a show car and you'll just cruise around, it doesn't matter if you'll lose 2-3mph.(hey, at least you know you're not being catch by radars
)
fair enough on the wheel width but he asked for speedo, going as close to stock diameter regardless if the wheel is an inch wide or a mile wide is still going to net him the most accurate speedo.
I am very familiar with your experience of different size wheels affecting the overall size of the tires somewhat, but i am not running swampers on the cav
yeah, i know but sometimes if the width of the tire is wider than the wheels, car looks taller than it should be,then it increases diameter too so it affects your speed.....actually i don't rely on correct tire size anymore, i just prefer which one looks good on my cavy.right now am using incorrect tire size so am losing some mph, anyway it doesn't matter cause am just cruising with it.am making my cavy more of a show car than drag with it. I have a friend who relied on opinions and not his personal preferences, putting it all in his car, well....car went bad.hehehe.
well what i have on there is...225/45r/17. which does give the wider agressive look which i like and do relize i am going to need to drop it a couple inchs.
and i looked at the sticky because the stock size was 195/70r/14 which says at 65 your really doing 65.6. which i can deff live with just wondering if at different speed does it vary.
thanks guys
overall it *should* be a percentage off due to the difference in circumference of the current tire versus stock. so at any speed it will be x% off whichever way, negligible change as the tires wear due to the smaller lugs where the change is going to be in the /32nds of an inch in the diameter.
for my plate of crow, abdul has a good point, i just don't really consider it as much on these smaller cars as much as in larger truck tires where the increase in size can be extremely significant and the lugs in the tires are generally much larger and can affect rolling circumference more as they are able to whittle away 1-3 inches of the diameter of the tire over time.
in follow up, don't listen to me tell you not to listen to someone else unless you can see my foot is not in my mouth while my head is in my arse
it's ok to listen to someone's opinion.you can still read stickies as they cover the basics to advance and they are a good help for basing your personal preferences.that's why our cars are being modified so it will be "personalized". one more thing, he's asking for the speed as he worries for the radars.i don't think it's a good idea to race in the streets where there are plenty of cars around you. i'm sure everybody here have watched fast and the furious, in real life too street racers make sure they have a controlled environment.
i wasnt saying i want to race. my car is also my daily driver so if im doing 70 on the highway i wanna make sure i am doing that speed rather then get pulled over cause i was really doing 80. thats the only reason i asked and being that tires and rims are a foreign to me i wante to ask people who new more. thankt everyone for all your help

no its not true do not give out false info. 17s need a 215/45/17 or a 225/45/17. whatever you read is wrong. there are cases though where you can used a 40 series tire on 17s but thats only if you get a wide tire like a 235/40/17. most people dont usually run that because it will rub.

again you do not know what your talking about. your friends wheels verus your wheels doesnt matter. he can have the exact same wheel with the same size, width and offset but you could both have 2 different tires. a recommened tire on a civic for 17s is 205/40/17 which is the correct size for a civic but for a cavalier its way too small.

thats about the only smart thing you have said in this thread.
I didn't bother reading most of this gibberish.
Anyways, 225/45R17 is the size that is closest to stock size. I have seen charts at work to prove this, most people say to run a 215/45R17, but it actually throws the speedometer off more if you run that size. The 225 is .3% shorter than the stock size, I don't remember what the 215 is.
The rubbing noise could be your brakes, check them out.

Im runnin 215/45/17 right now and i love them. i think it looks good.....and my cavy is not lowered. as far as

not necessarily true. the middle number being your aspect ratio determines the percentage of width your sidewall will be. so in my case with the 215, 45% of that is what my sidewall will be. add that to you rim size and you should come up with the overall height. and anyone does know how much off the speedo will read this will be helpful as i was wondering too.
im honestly so confused because it seems like we wondered don every road but the one i wanted haha. gonna read throught this again tonight to try to fiqure it all out lol
Basically, if you have 225/45 or 215/45, you're fine. The most your speedo will be off is a little over 1 mph which is nothing to worry about. Go here...
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
You'll be able to see exactly how much you're going to be off but just as an example: I had 195/65/15 tires stock. I then put on 215/45/17 and now my speedo is fast 1.5%. That means if I'm actually going 78.8 mph, my speedo will say 80.
If that doesn't help, I don't know what will
haha thanks john got it know lol and had my gf drive behind me last night and sawthat my speedo is just about 1 mph faster then im going
