Gunmetal wheels on a red car - hot or not?
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 10:09 AM
I've been keeping my eyes open for a proper set of tires for my 18" silver MR7 wheels for a while now (my current tires are too-small 215/35s). I have no problem with the MR7 wheels, in fact I'm quite fond of them. I've got a possible line on a set of tires, mounted on a set of 18" gunmetal MR7s for $500. The tires are Yokohama Parada with about half their life left, and the rims are in better shape than mine.

Regardless of whether I can get these or not, my reason for posting today is to ask -- would I be crazy to go to the trouble to getting the tires remounted onto my silver rims, or would gunmetal rims look just as good or better?

My silver MR7s:

Keep in mind I just messed with the colors. The tire size -- which is the main reason for my considering this purchase, would be changed to the correct 225/40/18. Tell me what you think.

it's a hard choice. If it was me I'd keep it with the white. But if it turns you on, then why not?

White wasn't one of the options. You fail.

I've just got my silvers cleaned up, and they are glimmering in the noon sun. White would be nice too, but I don't have those. I prefer the silver over the gunmetal personally, but it's complicated by a few things:
a) The gunmetal rims are in better shape. My silvers have several touch-ups, toolmarks, and one fairly serious gouge in a bead area.
b) The only shop in my town that can work with low-profile tires wants $30 per wheel to do a tire mounting, and I don't think that would even include taking the tire off a different rim. Also, from a reselling standpoint, I'd probably have better luck selling the old tires mounted on rims as a package, so I'd have to pay for re-mounting the old tires. All in all, this is a couple hundred bucks I could keep if I could learn to love the gunmetal.
c) I still need to work something out with the guy that has the wheels, first.

I think proper size tires would help more then paint.

I know the pictures were pretty to look at, but reading some of the words in my original post might have been helpful in forming a useful comment.

In my opinion gunmetal looks good on just about any color. I say go for gunmetal.

Apparently the seller had them tentatively sold by the time I got back to him, and that a guy was going to come by and "check if they would fit his car". Since it was pretty clear that they were a universal 5-lug, I'm most likely out of luck. He was going to let me know either way, so I'll have to wait and see.

Nah, bronze belongs on white, black, or navy blue.

Don't get me wrong, I'd probably try bronze out if I had wheels given to me, but I don't think I would buy them.

BRONZE FTW!! But if that's not an option, then gunmetal. Definitely looks nice on a red car.

WR Blue is a more saturated and brighter hue, and is accented better by gold. Navy blue looks better with a more subdued color like bronze. Or so I think.

Looks like I might be able to pick up the gunmetal wheels with tires after all. If all goes well, I'll be able to pick them up on the weekend. Hopefully they're in as nice shape as the guy says, and I'll be able to get put them on next week. Then those people that nag me about my tires *every* time I post pictures can take a rest.

Heres the link to the ad I'm buying from. I'm in Goderich -- but this guy has the wheels at his father's place in Mississauga, but apparently had been in London before. He told me the tires (Yokohama Paradas) have two summers and about 18,000k on them, but a good bit of tread left. This suits me fine since I'm a very low-mileage driver. Supposedly the wheels have been in storage for a couple more years, he doesn't have the car anymore, and is selling the wheels and tires.

It doesn't sound like the same wheels, but if my chance I'm looking at your old set, I'd be happy for any details. Otherwise if anyone sees anything obviously wrong in at ad that I overlooked, I'm open to opinions.

And here they are. On a dirty car.

There were a couple of issues with them that werent described, but the price was right. I was mainly in it for the tires anyways.
