whats a good tire brand?
Friday, March 02, 2007 6:26 PM
This spring I will be purchasing rims and tires for my cavalier.. I'm gonna go with 18" and a 225/40zr/18 tire. My question is, what is a good brand to go with that will offer good handling. traction and the least amount of noise? Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thank you.

I like Kumho personally. Awsome handling with a set of Z rated, and they're pretty quiet. The traction is also good.

to be more specific, Kumho SPT's, they run a little under $400 for a set of 4 from tirerack.com.

bfg, yokohama, dunlop goodyear..the list goes on. it's just a matter of how much you are willing to spend.

ive had 2 sets of kumho 711 tires (225/45-18 and 215/50-17) didnt care for them. wet traction is pretty good but dry sucks. if you have a large sway bar on the rear they slide very easy under quick steering inputs like dodging road debris. i prefer Hankook tires personally. ive had the HRII 405 in 225/50-16 and K106 in 205/55-16. both are quite good in the wet and very good for thier price in the dry. however the K106 isnt the quietest tire ive had, but its not outrageous either.

i have owned the kumho 712's for about 3 years now...225-45-17

Positives:
Good dry traction
agressive look
not too expensive ($99 per)

Negatives:
"tracks the road"
Can be noisy at times
Summer tire only (may be a neg. thing)

Dunno where to put it but they should last about 20,000 miles

all in all id give them an 8-8.5

best of luck!

I have khumos now on my 17's and i really don't like them... I don't think they have good track. But of course im running a turbo.

So yesterday i purchased some BFG KDW's to go on my new 18's. I have heard nothing but good news on these tires. The only problem is there pretty price

BF goodrich FTW!

On my second set of Yokohama AVS ES-100s. Inexpensive and perform great. Very predictable handling and wear decently. The next set will be either Goodyear GS-D3's or Yokohama Neovas.

Nice purchase. I am running the KDWS's. Only difference between mine and yours is mine are also made for snow, hence the extra S, and they aren't directional like yours. I freaking love the tires though, they do have some road noise, I finally heard it the other day when I didn't have the stereo up, but it's not bad. They should give you better grip provided that you also are going a little wider, but they have given my light rear ended Camaro some nice grip, and they do great in the snow.. atleast mine did.

I'm glad you said that about coopers, I just recently ordered my rims, I bought 17" Sportmax 941 wheels, black in finish, still ned to order tires yet but gonna go with a 215/45/17 cooper

I got kind of addicted to Bridgestone during the 2 years that I worked for them. My Potenza S03 Pole Positions have been nothing short of perfection in the 2+ seasons I've had them. Unbelievably sticky, excellent performance in the rain, and considering they're a Y-rated tire with no tread life warranty, have worn very, very well (~55% worn/~20,000 miles). Too bad they discontinued them.

i dislike kumho

the only reason everyone has them is because they are the cheapest "performance tire" you can get

so now you have a few thousand highschool kids and poor young people who buy the tires and think, hey, these tires are great! when in doubt they have never tried any other tire out because they are too poor

cheap does not = good

I love Toyo Proxes 4. They grip and handle awesome for me (due to copper band construction (according to discount tire)), have a quiet ride, and are comfortable to ride on. Problem is, they are made of very soft rubber, meaning low mileage tires (daily aggressive driving).
