maybe im dumb, or maybe im making this to complicated... ive been reading all these posts about sizing tires and everything... but i dont understand how you can size up a tire... i know my stock tire size is 195, 75, 14... all i can decipher from this IS 14 inside dimensions for the Rims... what are the other numbers for?
i think the 75 is something along the width of the tire? like 75 = 7.5"
please help me get this figured out...
im also looking into 17's X 7.5 or 18's X 7.5 for my car (over the summer when i have money)
would those tires be 195 75 17? or is there a different way to measure them? i dont want to change the overall dimensions of my tires and wheels, but i want bigger wheels and a lot less tire.

Yeah they mix imperial and metric for tire sizes, just to make it extra easy...
17s need 215/45/17 or 225/45/17
so the 225s would be thicker tires then?
225s would be wider than 215.
it more or less goes width/height/rim size. Like everyone said the wall height is a ratio of the width, so a 225/45/17 tire's width would be 45 percent of 225. So the tire wall would be roughly 101mm tall. Hope that helps out a bit more. Plus look into the FAQ, since certain tire types will have an effect over the speedo with the transition of a 14in to 17in wheel.
yeah thats why i want to keep the same overall dimensions... just with 3" more wheel and 3" less tire... relatively speaking my speedo will probably need recalibrated, but they should do this for me when they mount the new set correct?
no it does not need to be recalibrated if you get the proper tire size. as said

thanks guys, im a little shaky but im feelin a little better about this. im gonna go with the 17s then... no sense in the 18s shouldnt be to much different.. other than cost
unfortunately the tire shop that remounts the new tires won't recalibrate your speedo. that would be a dealer that would have to go in and do that.
so i should definetly stick with the same total size?

he does not need the speedp recalibrated. its not hard to figure out that as the rim size goes up, the tires size gets smaller to keep the same overall diameter.
if you want 17s, get either one of the tire sizes i said and you'll be fine
17's need 225/45/R17, if you put a 215 on there your speedo will be 1 mph slow.
yeah i understand that he doesn't need it done. but if he was still going to do it. i was going to give him advice. i work in a tire shop i know that when it changes it is very little amounts of change
