I asked about 205 50 16 and was told they would fit fine, well I have now decided i want somethign wider and my GF doesnt want her car lowered so im gonan go with a taller tire also. These are going on celica GTS wheels. I was also told the hub bore is to small witch infact it was, so I had them machined out a little bit. Didnt take much at all. but they fit great now.
Anyways Im just wondering if a 245 50 16 will fit? I know its pretty wide but would look great IMO
She has a 205 70 14 on there now and the 245 40 16 will be shorter and the 50 will be a little taller and not sure if it will fit.
any suggestions?
thanks
245/50/16 is going to be too big i believe. i think you would want 245/45/16. dont quote me on that, i could be wrong
Yea thats what I was thinkin, there are just alot more choices and higher treadwear rating with the 50 series sidewall. anyone have any pics of a 245 on a Jbody??
thanks for the info guys
you might rub w/ a 245. a 235/45/16 is possible

Yeah, either that or a 245/40 if they even make a tire in that size.. not even sure if there is a 245/45/16 but that would be about what he would need.
He says that he wants a taller tire though, so he could just stick with a 245/50 if he wants to go taller.

yea but then its gonna throw the speedo off
How wide are the rims? If the stock tire on that rim was only a 205 then its probably like a 6" or 6.5" wide rim, a 245 is wayy to wide for that rim. You need like at least a 16x8" rim for a tire that size and even if you did manage to cram a 245 on a 6" rim it would look stupid cause the sidewall would bulge out too far but more thn that its a safety issue, the tire just wont seat right and you really increase the possibiliy of the tire coming off the rim. Normally you can go up one, maybe two steps on a rim so if it was 205 stock then 215 or maybe 225 would be the widest you could go. Aside from that the 50 or 45 series sidewall doesnt affect tread width, just bulge which could definitly be a clearance problem especially when you hae a tire thats way too wide for the rim. To fit some 245's on a cav you really need some properly fitted rims more then likely with the right offset and backspacing. To put it in perspective, 245/50R16s are the stock tire size for 3rd & some 4th gen F-bodies.
I cant keep anything stock....
One more thing, the sidewall is rated as a percentage of the tread width. So a 205 width tire (205mm across the tread) with a 70 series sidewall means that the sidewall is 70% the width of the tread (143.5mm). So if you are trying to figure a tire size that wont throw off your speedo too much you normally decrease the sidewall aspect ration in 5% increments when you increase the tire width in 10mm incriments (loose guideline). Hence a 195/70R14 (136.5mm sidewall height) and a 205/65R14 (133.25 sidewall height) are closer in overall height then a 195/70 and a 205/70 (by 3.23mm vs. 7mm respectively). I think a lot of people get confused and think that the sidewall profile number is the same no matter what the tread width is. So anyway, to sum it all up, if you want a wider tire on the rims you have now he next step up would be 215/45R16 except that there is only one tire that i know if in that size and the sidewall would be short enough to throw off the speedo a significant amount. If you want to go wih a 225/45R16 BFG does make a KDW in that size and it specifically says it is good for plus 1 and plus 2 applications (this being a Plus 2) so you may be ok with that. And on the plus side the sidewall on the 205/50 is 102.5mm and the sidewall on the 225/45 is 101.25mm so your speedo should still be pretty close to the same (it might be off though depending on what the factory tires were for your car). Hope that helps.
I cant keep anything stock....
the rims are 16x7's and the 245's minumun width wheel says 7". But yes it would still have a slight buldge. Going to a 215 wont even be noticable so i am thinkin atleast a 225 would be worth it.
I would like to keep the same hight as the 205/70-14's that are on it now, but even the 245 45 16's are shorter than that, but with the extra width they would need to be. The 225 50 is also shorter.
ill just have to go with somthing, I just wasnt sure if a 245 would fit or not. Or course it depends on backspacing and ECT anyways.
in a 16" your best bed will prolly end up being a 225-50-16. thats a lil bit wider and will not have any issues rubbing.I would think that a 245 it going to be way to wide for what you need.

i could have sworn the celica wheels werent any wider than 6.5"s.
anyways, not all tires are created equally. depending on how stiff the sidewalls are some will fit different size wheels depending on the brand and model of the tire, even if they are in the same size. generally though, these are going to be stiff ones and are going to be pretty much all the same width ranges.
personally, i would go with the 225/50R16 for that size of a wheel.
and putting a taller tire might make it appear lower, but people will still notice and it will probably look like ass. if you want to get rid of wheel gap, lower the car. dont take short cuts.

Celica GT-S wheels ARE 16x6.5
I should know, I'm sporting them on my 'rolla.

245/45r16 is a popular size... but you're going to ned AT LEAST a 7.5" wheel to have any sort of performance benifit... using a wide tire on a narrow wheel detracts from any performance benifits because the sidewall is so warped and, thus, soft (hence the stretched tires you see on a lot of cars these days -- for instance my buddies old S13 had 16x9's with 225/50r16's all around, the turn-in response was awesome, much better than my GT-S wheels with 225/50's on them).
You would have to custom order some low-ish offset 16" wheels to make this work. Look at J-Line, Work, or AME wheels for ordering information www.autornd.com ... a 16x8.5 +35 would fit that tire no problem just need to roll your fenders and it *might* rub at full lock (I did all kinds of crazy things with my Cavy as far as fitments went since it's been in storage at my friend's shop).
One more thing, 245/45r16's are exactly the same overall diameter as 205/55r16's... why don't you just stick with the 205/55's?
