just playing around with some options here and was wondering if anybody knows... can i fit 245/40/17's under my sedan without much/any modification? also, what width wheel would you suggest and what offset?
any input would be appreciated...
I think it can work. Its goin to need a 7.5 - 8" wheels with a 40ish mm offset.

the wheels i'm lookin at are a 17x8 with either a 35mm or a 48mm offset
well either way i think your screwed w/ that wide of a tire. the 35mm is gonna put it close to the fender and the 48mm is gonna put it close to the perches. if it were me, id just go w/ the right tire size and go w/ the 35mm offset
I have thought about that same size. Get toyo fenders for the front and tuck the the rears they should fit. I was going to run track lites with those tires because they are 17x8 with 5x100 bolt pattern and 40mm offset
bagged cav... i'm looking for a wider contact patch than a 215 would provide. i'm currently running on 225/40/18's.
ive seen 245/45/17's on cavs
not sure if my friend had 40's or 45's , but they were on 17x7's so im guessing 45's
its also the size ill be running on mine on 17x8 45 off set
If it helps any, i'm running 235/40/17 tires on 17X7.5 wheels with a 48mm offset. I am also using 3mm spacers for the front wheels.

i'm already runnin 225's... i'm looking for a wider contact patch... i feel like i'm talking in circles here.

as widthe increases, the height in the same series will also
ie, 215/45 will be a shorter tire than a 235/45

Just to throw this out there. You get to wide and hurt your performance. It may not matter to much depending on what kind of power you are putting out.

the car will be turbo'd this winter so the performance aspect of things i'm not all that worried about it. i'm actually hoping it will help get some more grip when the car hits boost.
as for the aspect ratio, a 245/40/17 is almost identical to a 225/40/18 as far as outside diameter is concerned.

A 245/40/17 will not be any taller than his current tire. In fact its almost a half inch shorter.....

from the looks of it, i'm gonna have to go to a smaller aspect ratio. otherwise the rears will be sticking out pretty good. if i go smaller aspect ratio, i should be able to slide under the rear spring perches and not have a tire sticking out 2". now i just need to figure out what aspect ratio and what offset (and/or spacers) i'm gonna need to pull it all together.
any suggestions (other than 215's or 225's) appreciated...
What do you mean smaller aspect ratio? Where are you getting the sticking out 2" in the rear?

a friend of mine happened to have a 245 width tire sitting around that wasn't mounted on a rim. we played around with it a bit using a jack and no wheel on the car.
by aspect ratio i mean sidewall. the only way the 245's are gonna fit is to clear (tuck under) the rear spring perch. currently, my 18's sit outside the spring perch but level with it. (in other words they don't tuck under the rear spring perch)
i have a camera phone pic of the tire sitting even with the spring perch and how far it sticks out that i can post up if you'd like to see...
A 245/40/17 tire is about a half inch shorter than you current 225/40/18 tires.
I know for a fact that 235/40/17 tires fit with no issues in the rear even with very different offsets. I have them on 48mm offset wheels with no rubs and a friend of mine has them on 35mm offset wheels with no rubs. Both cars have 2.3" drop sportline springs.
That info tells me that a 10mm wider tire on a wheel that has a offset in between the 2 listed abouve (around 40) shouldn't have any issues.
A few more details to look at...
235/40/17 tire outside diameter = 24.4"
245/40/17 tire outside diameter = 24.7"
225/40/18 tire outside diameter = 25.1"

You can fit a 245 in the rear on an 8 or 8.5" wheel with a +35 with NO problem, you'll need to roll the fender though. Up front you'll need a lower offset and you'll probably have to do more than just rolling and pulling the fender.
skilz... does your tire actually go under the lower spring perch in the rear? judging off my worn 225/40/18's, i'd estimate that i'd probably need to go an inch smaller to fit under the rear perch... if i can get under the rear perch, i'd have alot more room to play with fitting the tire in the fenderwell
20rob05... running the offset you are talking about with that size tire would put me outside the fender by 1-2" hell on a 35mm offset, your pushing the wheel out further away from the perch than my 18's do with a 42mm offset. again, if the tire has to sit outside the spring perch, to clear without rubbing on the perch it would not fit INSIDE the fenderwell. to pass inspection, i wouldn't be able to (nor would i want to) run the car that way. are you speaking from experience or what you've heard?

Sorry but a 35mm offset on a 8.5" wheels is pushing the wheel way out passed the fender. In fact that pushes the edge of the wheel out an extra 44mm over stock, thats a lot!

I just went outside and looked, yes the top of my 235/40/17 sits under the rear spring perch. Just by eye the tire looks to be about .25" below the spring perch on the passenger side and maybe a hair more on the drivers side. Using the tire calculator i use says that the 245/40/17 is only .3" taller over all so that means only .15" per side. With the right offset i'm almost certain a 245/40/17 tire on a 7.5" wheel will fit.

i was running the miata tire calculator to do some calculations already. i was just worried that the worn down 18" tire i have now may not account for the full tread of a new tire.
hmmm... i may just buy one rim and tire to do some test fitting. worst case, the wheel will still work, i'd just need to experiment with tires...

18x8.5 fits NO PROBLEM in back, you don't even need a roll unless you're dumped.
The front needs a roll and a SLIGHT pull to clear, but no problems.

Who said they won't fit? Not me. Just because you put wheels on your car that stick out way too far and still fit doesn't make they the right size and offset.
