i was just wondering what size do most of ya'll use for 17's that have a drop. i look on tirerack and it recommends 215/45 but it looks to big. what size do most of ya'll use.
check the tire calculator. 215/45/17 will work but 225/45/17 is closer. the only difference between the 215 and 225 is the width of the tire.
so is there no wrong tire size cause the 17's i wanna buy come with 205/15 i think

205/15 is completely wrong. as long as you get either 215/45/17 or 225/45/17 you'll be good
205/50/17 is ok as well, but really only good for winter tires. No point in going that narrow for summer performance.
Getting smaller tires ends up looking stupid. If you want a lower profile tire, you need to get larger wheels. There's no such thing as a 205/15 but if you're thinking about 205/45 or 205/40, avoid them at all costs. The size is most definitely wrong and will end up being more trouble than they're worth.
Erica - i think you might be confused with tire sizes.
215/45/17
-The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters.
-The second is the size of the sidewall (or the side of the tire that we all see sticking out of the rim). The smaller the number, the less sidewall. The larger the number, the bigger the sidewall.
-The third, and final, number is the size of your wheel, or rim, whichever you prefer

well that link is just for the rims. if you get tires dont get 205/40/17, thats way off and way too small. most common are 225/45/17 or 215/45/17

close, but not exact. i used to think the same.
i work for a tire shop, and learned alot since.
the first is correct, number is the width in mm.
the second is the ASPECT RATIO. basically, its a percentage base measurement for the sidewall. in this case for example. the 45 would stand for 45% of 215 mm. the side wall would measure 96.75 mm high.
17 of course is the diameter of the rim.

now. first things first.....
are you going to be driving on these tires all year round? when i go into work tonight i'll take a look at some stuff to see whats available to run in your size.
is your original the 14, 15, or 16 inch rim? all mods have to be done off of the original size.
how wide are the rims you are looking at? are they 17 x 7 , 17 x 7.5 , etc.
once i know what size rim you are looking at i can find what tires will fit that, then i have to look at what pressure you will have to run those tires at to withstand the weight of your car. some tires may not be able to handle the weight of the car at all and can either be dangerous or make your car handle like @!#$.
different tires, depending on what type of metric they are, will hold different weights. the two main type of metrics are p-metric and euro-metric. P-metric will have a P infront of the tire size, like P195/65R15. Euro will not. P-Metric and Euro hold different weights at different pressures.

...yes, erica, not only will a low low profile tire make your wheels look small and youll have a lot of fender gap, but the ride will be harrrrrsh harsh haahahahrsh. I used to run 225/4016s, and felt every bump IN the road. Go with a 45 series tire, youll like it better, and itll fill the fenderwell gap better.
