Replacing tires, first time. Goodyear Eagle RSA's
Sunday, October 23, 2005 6:41 PM
If this has been discussed previously, I apologize in advance for kicking a dead horse.

I have an 04 cavalier with the sport package. Not sure what all it included, but I have these expensive Goodyear Eagle RSA tires 205/55/16 and 16" machined aluminum rims.

A few months back, SOMEHOW I got a nail in the side wall of a tire. I got a friend that worked at a tire place give me a 2nd hand tire to get me by at the time. Over time, the tire quit holding air, and now it's bald.. heh..

And the inevitable happened again. SOMETHING punctured the side wall of my other front tire.. this time I was pulling into a parking lot, parked the car, got out and heard the PSSSSSSH of air rushing out of my tire. I have no idea what happened, but something puncture the sidewall facing the car. heh. what luck huh?

Anyway, I plan on buying a pair of tires to replace these 2 duds. But I know the dealership charges an arm and a leg for these tires. I'm sure they don't cost much less else where.

Any advice on where to get cheap tires, and what to replace my Eagle RSA's with? I live in south carolina, so I don't have to worry about ice or snow, just occasional rain...

Thanks guys!

The Eagle RSA's are a very poor tire. They have soft sidewalls and little traction. I'm using the Falken Zeix 512's(can be seen on above link). I think they are an excellent street tire.

Agreed. You might also think about upgrading the fronts to a 225/50/16.

sorry, i'm a tire newb, i don't know what each number represents.
I currently have 205/55/16 -- you say I should go with 225/50/16?

i'm not sure what each number represents, but I'd assume that one is the width, one is the profile, and the other is the diameter.. don't know which order they go in.

I would assume the first number would be the width ... and I would assume that increasing the width on the front tires would give better traction because it's a front wheel drive car. you changed the 55 to a 50, so i'm assuming that's the profile? why would you make that smaller?

how would changing the tires to different sizes effect getting them rotated? I thought when you got your tires rotated, they swapped the front tires to the back AND left to right. the back tires come straight forward.

sorry, i know this probably seems pathetic, but I really don't know much about tires... Thanks for your help!

205/55/R16

205 is with in MM

55 is aspect ratio

16 is the size of wheel

And to tell you the truth, I like my RSA's. They dont grip THAT bad. (better than the POS $50 tires on my regal)

The wider the tire, the same the aspect ratio needs to be to keep the same overall height. A 205/55/16 is the same height as a 225/50/16, just the 225 is wider.

alittle further clarification... the "spect ratio" is a fancy name for saying the percent of the width....

first now is the width in millimeters liek the stated, the second number is the hieght of the sidewall, but not mesures in millimeters, its messured in percent of the width, (a 300/50/16 will have ALOT bigger sidewall thena 200/50/16 * those tires size don't mean @!#$... just for comparasion sake) and as stated the 3rd number is what size wheel they fit
