205 / 60 / 15 (tire question)
Friday, August 19, 2005 5:50 AM
i read the faq, and saw that with 15s the stock tire size should be 195 / 65 / 15

my tires are currently 205 / 60 / 15

im a tire newb, but from what i read does that mean that i have the wrong tire size? I also though maybe my car came stock with 14s and the tire was just upgraded correctly but it didnt match the chart.. can anyone help me.. as im looking into 18s now and i want to know wut size tire to put on my car

thanks

No they're fine. Tire sizes can be confusing but just keep in mind that if the outside diameter ( where the tread is ) is within one inch of the original diameter then your fine.
And in your case yes you are ok with them.

so if im reading these correctly..

my tires are 10mm wider and have roughly 3mm less sidewall than the stock 195/60 tires?

Well close. The width you have right but when you go wider you need to drop the side wall area down in size or it will be too tall. The sidewall area is the second number and is refered to as the aspect ratio. The easiest way to do it is that when you increase the width you need to decreese the aspect ratio to keep the rolling diamter the same.
Confused yet? I know its hard sometimes so I'll just tell you what you need rather then let you try to figure it out. I'm not mean like that.

Your 15's are fine if you go to a 16inch wheel you'll need a 205/55r16
17's would be 215/50r17 and your 18's would be 225/40r18's

I have the 18's on my car with about a 2 1/4inch drop and its great you'll love it.

let me know if you need any more help.

Sorry had a customer I had to go. Just keep the rolling diameter within 1 inch overall
of the factory size and you'll be just fine. A mm either way isn't gonna do anything.

Don't worry. That size will be fine. I actually just bought a set of wheels off a friend with the same size tires, 205/60/15's on my 03 Sunfire. I actually like the feel of them better than when I had the 195/65/15's.

17's should have either a 215/45/17 or a 225/45/17 tire, I prefer the second, 18's should have a 225/40/18 tire.

Not my info its from Costcos tire center and tire rack. Like I said just keep the diameter
of the tread within 1 inch of stock and your fine. So Rob is very close on the 17's youd just need to check the manufacturers specs to make sure. And as for the 18, thats what I said.

Its a difference but I wouldn'y say BIG. If you look at the same size tire from different manufacturers the diameter will change between them even tho its the same size tire.
It all goes by how they measure it. Our tire should be about 25 inches in diameterso to go up to 26 wont kill you.
