2inch drop+17 or 18 anyone out there
Friday, August 05, 2005 9:48 AM
Ok so I can finaly afford some wheels. I got an 04 cav. dropped 2 inches with megan racing springs. I'm trying to see if anyone out there has these already with 17
or 18 inch wheels. I'm leaning toward 18's just cause they look so damn good. But
before I buy them I want to know if the ride will completly suck afterwards? I'm not into being able to run over a quarter and be able to tell you if its heads or tails are up. Any info on how the ride quailty should be afterwards would be great. Thanks.

The ones I'm looking at are BBS style rims and there silver, On my orenge car 18s
should look good what do you think?

I got a 2" drop and 18s but I'm riding on Koni Reds. The ride I don't will chage that much but if you are riding on stock struts then it will suck. It's not the tires but the struts that will make most of the difference in the suspension department with your setup.

J, Yeah I've found out about the struts live and learn right? Anyway if I get the wheels now later on I can always get struts. The cash is extra so my wife cant bitch about the rims and tires. later on I get struts cause I would need them.

The diff is wheels want......... struts need . That way she cant bitch at me.

But thanks man. and are you saying when I do the struts the ride will go back to being smooth? almost like it was from the factory?

it depends on what bodykit you get if you are getting no kit or a small kit like bomex or type j 17s are ok but for the drift you need 18 at the least

Think about it logically, running say a 40 series tire versus a 55 series... I wonder what's gonna feel better...

With 18's, you're gonna feel EVERYTHING. It might handle better (mainly because of more firm sidewalls/better tires, assuming you buy quality), but its gonna ride like @!#$. Also, you're gonna lose acceleration, gas mileage, and way more likely to bend a rim if you hit a pothole. 18's are for show, not for daily driving.

Honestly, I can't believe you're spending money on the rims before the struts. No matter what size tire you get its gonna ride like @!#$.

Thanks Dave. I know 18's are mainly for show and not daily driveing but the cobalt ss has them stock and one of the guys at work let me drive his it felt not too bad.

What I meant by doing the rims first is that I want rims, Rims are an optional part that I would like to put on my car. Struts are a nessary thing that the car needs. I have extra money coming in in the next couple weeks, about $800.00 to $1000.00. Now since this money is extra I can buy something I want, Rims. My cars struts and mounts are still
under warrenty and my service manager is pretty cool. He told me he'd still warrenty the struts even tho I have aftermarket springs on the car. The ride is stiff but no worse so then my old Trans-Am was. I have never had a sport compact before this is my first I've allways had rwd small block or big block cars so I'm learning as I go. I was only curious as to how 18's would effect the ride. I know I need new struts and I planing on Tein's and Tein springs tax time but you can only do so much at one time.

differently go with 18s, your ride will only change if you do a cheap spring setup or a stiff one. I have drop zone coilovers and kyb performance struts and the ride was so stiff, it sucked driving it.

There is some misinformation here that needs to be corrected.

A few facts about getting 18' wheels on a J-body:

The car will not feel like a square wheeled mack truck if you use the proper tire size.

Offset is a critical point to learn about when you plus size tires and wheels.

The offset of 18's can be 39-45 depending on your tire size and lowering preferences.

The lower the offset number the further the wheel moves outward (towards the fender) from the hub. You don't want a very high offset number because you can rub the wheel well when you turn. You also don't want too low of an offset number because then your wheels stick out and tires can be damaged with lowered cars this way.

As for the ride it will change and you will feel more of the road but how you view that is up to you.

18' wheels are fine for daily driving. As long as you don't aim and speed up for potholes then you should be fine

Basically what I am saying is to not do stupid things like race over speed bumps and floor it when you come to a hole in the road.

It's the driver that can damage or bend the wheels based on the way they drive the car.

A strut upgrade (not stock) is really a must when you plus size wheels on a J body.

Larger wheels and tires will not affect the height of the car if the proper tire size is used.

There is a tire calculator that you can use at the top of this forum if you want to choose different sizes of tires and keep things kosher.

This site has FAQ's that are very helpful, alot of what I said here comes from the people who made them.

Any questions you can e-mail me or post here.

People who don't understand what they are talking about need to read a little and learn before they give advice.

take your own advice, you can go as low as a 35mm offset

Thanks Lightning and bagged I know the size tire I need ( 225 40 18 )
that way the rolling diameter stays the same as factory and wont thorw anything off.
I know I need new struts like I said tax time. But I was just curious as to what I should expect. And no I don't drive like an idiot..... ok not most of the time anyway . But I do
slow down for bumps, speed or pot hole, or just avoid them altogther if I can so I guess I'll be ok. But thanks guys When I get them I'll see if I can post some pics.

The overall diameter if you get the correct tires is the same so it will be the same as lowering on 16's
