I have 225/40/18 tires and 18" rims. I had a friend mount them today and the tire didn't fall around the rim the first time, only half went on so we figured we'd reverse the machine and take it off. In the process the vertical bar went through part of the sidewall puncturing it. It DID NOT rip all the way through, so I figured I was going to have a professional apply a patch on the inside of the tire and have them mounted by a professional shop. The shop that did it is reputable, it was just an accident that happened. When looking at the tire you can't even notice the little gouge. Do you think I will be okay just applying a patch to the inside?
Nope... Sidewall repairs are a no no ... Very unsafe.... There is too much movement and roll in the sidewall of a tire for any patch to stick safetly..... DO not patch that sidewall, even if it didn't go through it all the way, just punctured the inside casing, once you start filling that with air it will get between the sidewall and the inner casing... Causing a nice buldge in the sidewall....A patch isn't a good idea, replace the tire. Some places will say that patching, or pluggin sidewalls are fine...... Anyone who values there safety and the safety of others, will know otherwise...

Damn, it was just a small nick on the outside too. probabaly only a millimeter deep or so. Even that small I should be worried about it? I'd hate to buy a new tire just for a minor accident like that.

There is a newer law that makes the tire repair place liable for any repairs that are too close to the sidewall, including the sidewall.
I had a nail that was close to the sidewall, but still in the tread area. I went to five tire places, and all of them said that they could not repair it due to this law.

Yea I called Sears and they wouldn't fix it because of that law. I want a shop that knows what they are talking about to look at the tire before I order a new one.
If all the shops you check out know about the law, then 100% of them will not repair it. There is ALOT of liability on them if they do repair it.

Another thing to do with repairs, tires are not supposed to be repaired, plugged, patched at all. Once the casing is broken through due to a puncture that tire is supposed to be rendered useless. However most of the time if its a "S" rated tire, thats not a big deal, but some places won't repair anything with a higher speedrating then that.
Liability is BIG on the tire shops, here's a few examples. You drive a J body, go into a tire store, want two new tires put on ur car, they install those tires on the front right? Well if they do, and you for some reason have a accident of any kind due to loss of control of the car, you can sue that tire store for all they are worth. New tires in sets of two are supposed to be installed on the rear only now. Also same sitiuation... the tires are installed on the rear this time, I can't rememeber what the z24's placcard is but I tihnk there speed rating is supposed to be H or T .... Anyways... if thats the case, and you loose control of the car and have an accident... again the tire store who installed the incorrect speed rated tire, can be sued....Within the industry lately these are just some of the basic issues they are pushing now with the tire shops and stores... its retarded....

just get rid of it. i know it sucks but is that 120 dollars worth more than your life or life of others? no matter how small it is, over time its just going to get bigger and bigger.

I am guessing you guys are talking about ONLY car tires, because at the truck shop I work at, I patch and plug all tires unless there is not enough tread, we never fix sidewall holes though, even on a beefy semi truck tire, you do not try to run a patched sidewall tire, they are junk..

ya mostly just car tires, its not really anythin to strictly abid by, its sort of a recommendation. Unless its a corvette, or porsche, something worth while, it usually gets plugged anyways.... Like a "T" rated tire on a tempo. ya.. common.. its just a tempo... Its more a guide line... Like YEA you can be sued over it... but really .. there is sooo many more variables in someone losing control and killing someone doing 240 km's on a "S" rated tire with a "T" or "H" rated car.... first off doin 240, in a max 100 in ontario, or just goin that fast in general... There is no way that it would end up being the actual tire installers fault.. but there is always the possibilty basically... thats all they say.

as long as you didn't cut or damage any part of the sidewall thread body, then the tire should be fine, if it's only in the rubber and not very deep then I wouldn't worry about it. example: i'm a C-130 crew cheif and if a there is a sidewall cut in a tire it is allowable regardless of size if the thread body isn't exposed or damged, if it is exposed or damaged then it can be up to 1 inch in length, but thats on aircraft tires
