Hello everyone,

I am posting this for my uncle, he has a 99 Sunfire that started having issues yesterday. It is a 5 speed and on his way home from work he could not shift into 1st, 2nd, 5th or reverse. I have not been over to look at it personally so I am not sure if it won't go into gear or if it pops out yet. He said opened the cover in the engine bay where he could see the linkages and could put it in each gear just fine from there.

Could this be the linkage bushing worn out or what? I know how to work on cars but I know nothing about transmissions, any help is appreciated. I figured I could try here since I used to find some great advice on here when I was a member years ago when I had my 04 Cavalier.

This happened to me on my 90 Z24. Only had 3rd and 4th. Shifter cable broke

Shift linkage is your problem. Not that difficult to replace, just a little annoying as the path it takes can be irritating. I think new they are like $100? But I can't quite remember. The "bulb" socket part eventually goes on them. When they crack they don't hold well.
