Ive replaced the Isuzu through the bottom without removing the cradle, piece of cake. Ive replaced the 3-speed auto though the bottom as well without removing the cradle, a little diffucult, but it can be done. Has anybody replaced the 4T40E transmission through the bottom without removing the cradle? Will it physically work?

Also, i've been told over and over that the 98+ 4T40E is different from the 96-97. Are they full of themselves, or is this true?

I thought 98 was the first year for the 4 speed?

The computer programming is pretty much the same from 96-02. The plug that controls the 4T40E is also the same from 96-02. I do remember some kind of change in 98, but I beleive all 96-02 transmissions will work.
Are we talking LN2 or LD9. LN2 has a different bell housing from 98-02. LD9 bell housings are the same from 96-02.
Also, a 4T40E isn't coming out the bottom. unless your dropping the cradle.

So a 96 grand am tranny from an LD9 will have no problems in my 98?

I can not remember if the grand ams had a different side trans mount than the cavaliers.

So i checked my fluid just for the hell of it, i was only about 1/2 a quart low so i added some extra fluid i had laying around. Probably a waste of fluid, but ive had it sitting around for years.
Also, This may be a stupid question, but the CV axle doesn't look like its pushed in all the way. Does this look right to you?

Is this one of those cases where the aftermarket replacement axle was found to be slightly shorter than the stock axle? I remember reading that on here somewhere and I'm pretty sure it was a problem only automatics had.

i can move it about 1/8 inch back and forth so it feels like the lock ring is in place, it just doesnt look right

Yes, some of the after market axles are to short, and can pop out while turning sharply. I posted a bunch on info on this a while back.
