Ok, so the Getrag on my car started making noise. At first it sounded just like hub bearings, which were recently replaced. Well the noise was still present and running it with the wheels off the ground I found the noise coming from the gear box. To me it sounds like carrier bearings. Car has 150k on it and the fluid was changed at 100k. It still was cherry red. I just put another one in from a yard that supposedly had 80k and it is making the same noise from the gear box.
Has anyone had this issue before? This is on a stock car that isnt abused.
If it makes noise in neutral and if the noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal it's the throw out bearing. I'm on my 3rd one. If not you could remove one of the shafts and try to move the differential pin. If it moves up and down or side to side the diff's bad. Those are things you could check with the trans still in the car. If you do remove it again, spin the throw out by hand if it's not smooth or if it's noisy replace it, you can also check for play in the input shaft. If you have any play at all, bring it to a shop and get them to replace the bearings in the transmission unless you feel you can do it yourself or get another transmission.
If you find it's a faulty throw out bearing you might want to buy a clutch kit which comes with the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. (I was quoted 300$ for the bearing and slave cylinder assembly and 480$ for a direct replacement clutch kit from a parts store) I bought a spec stage 2 clutch from TurboTechRacing for 430$ plus 50$ for shipping.
No this definitely does not go away with the clutch in or out. The noise starts around 30 mph and increases with speed. This was verified via road test and with the wheel off the ground so that eliminates the a tire noise issue.
There is no play in the input shaft of the original trans or the one I just installed. Both shift perfectly with no grinding or other hang ups. They are just noisey.
P.S. I replaced the clutch and slave when I first got the car (about 50k miles ago). The slave still looked perfect, the bearing was smooth with no looseness or grittiness. The clutch has no slippage or other issues. Its definitely in the box.
Is the oil top up when the car sits level and did you put ATF in it?
Yes. I have 2 quarts of Castrol Dexron in it. The manual specifies 1.8 quarts so a little more isnt going to hurt anything.
Did some more checking today. Noise is there when trans is engaged to engine with wheels off the ground. Kick the clutch in and it goes away. But even in neutral with trans engaged it has the noise.
I removed the left side axle (which is the drive axle) and ran it. Same thing. Noise in gear and in neutral. Kick the clutch in and the noise goes away.
When driving its there constantly regardless of the clutch being in or out which leads me to believe that its one of the shaft bearings.
I got the cases split on my original one last night and found large chrome looking fragments stuck to magnet which is consistent with a failed bearing.
I think I might be wrong in my first post about the trow out bearing. I think that procedure is for the main shafts bearings
