Torque converter clutch (tcc) is a great thing when it doesn't have problems. It locks the converter 1:1 and lowers rpms and helps gas mileage and keep the fluid temps down. Being that you have a 96z24 you should have a 4t40e trans. The tcc solenoid could be worn out and causing it to stick. The reason I don't think you have an electrical issue is because if the solenoid was full on all the time your car would stall when you were at a light. Sometimes this is also a sign that your pump could be getting weak in the trans and has a hard time building pressure to release the tcc. I had this happen to me and shortly after the pump was gone in the trans. If I were you I would drop the pan and just take a look at your filter. If you haven't had regular transmission services, then I would save the trans fluid you drain and I would reuse it especially if it's a high mile car.
