In need of Ideas for finding Trans Position .. Stick.

Getrag trans.

I am in need of finding a way to know what gear trans is in for a computer.
Need to know if in neutral or what gear it is in.

Any ideas?

I have seen some that are integral to the shifter and use an inclinometer but that does not seem to reliable.

Any one have any ideas?

I have been thinking about micro-switches, though Neutral may be tough and I really need a Positive result for neutral ( not just --- if not gear 12345R then must be neutral)

I will have to fire up GM SI to look at Cobalt, I see no mention of it in MOD.

I think factory vehicles use boost by speed. If you know your gear ratios you can determine max speed in each gear and get similar results to boost by gear. My friend's SRT-4 has an AEM EMS and he does this. He has it set so the map for boost vs vehicle speed table is stepped, and it behaves like boost by gear.

For neutral you could get all of the switches to be normally open and closed (like this: http://www.bgmicro.com/swt1093.aspx). When you are in gear one of the buttons would be pressed, and close the circuit on the normally closed side. You would have 5 switches like this. The normally open sides of all 5 would be wired in series, so if even one of them was pushed, the normally open side would not have continuity. When all are not pushed, the normally open circuit would have continuity, indicating neutral. Let me know if this doesn't make sense.

Just have a micro switch at the bottom for neutral. Is this for remote start and/or progressive boost/N2O?

Unfortunately, not thinking I through away an old shifter to mess with

Wagonwes, ya that makes sense, 2 concerns,
How to mount them
and what if gear shifter gets sloppy, it is in gear but PC doesn't realize this and tries to start lol.

Will keep researching and plz post if you have any more ideas.

This will prolly be the way I have to go, but still brain stormin.

Ya I'm not sure how GM set it up, but even if you are not moving the computer knows what gear the trans is in.

It displays it in the RPD (little screen thing on the A-pillar) and it can also be logged via HPTuners.

Maybe pop over to cobaltss.net and see if they have any insite.
