2002 sunfire transmission swap
Sunday, January 09, 2011 7:55 AM
I went ahead and bought a transmission at a junkyard for an 02 sunfire. I swapped the transmission over. After trying to put the axles on, the passenger side of the transmission needs a different axle. It's has an output shaft coming from the transmission. I'm assuming there are two different types of transmissions. Will both types work with my 02 sunfire computer? I'm pretty pissed after spending 8 hours spread across two days on this thing.

I'm assuming you swapped from an automatic to a manual transmission. The two use different axles, yes. You'll need a set of the MTX axles.

No. It is an automatic. It appears there is a 3 and 4 speed automatic. The axle isn't my worry right now. That is an easy fix. I'm concerned with it wworking with the computer. I think I'm going to have to flash the edu.

Ok, so I assume wrong

Yes, there are 3 and 4 speed automatics. The 4 speed is electronically controlled and the 3 speed is vacuum controlled. The 4 speed should have a big round electrical connector at the top near the battery. If you don't have that on your car, you'll need to swap the engine bay harness and flash the computer (or get the 4 speed PCM) and swap that as well. Shifter too, unless you don't care about the right number of detents.

Well the three speed that was in the sunfire is electronically controlled. At least it had the plug. The reason I think this is the 4-speed is due to the transmission having an output shaft coming from both sides of the transmission instead of just the drivers side. The 3 speed that was in the car has an output shaft on the drivers side and needed an input shaft on the passenger side.

no such thing as an electronically controlled three speed in a j-body.

it may have a plug for a vss, but otherwise, it's vacuum controlled, and not computer controlled.

Okay so since that isn't possible, it seems that the old transmission was a 4 speed since it had the large round whtie plug on the front of the transmission. There were no vacuum lines for the old one. Is it possible that the new transmission is the same as the old one, except that it requires a different axle on the passenger side?

There is a small stub shaft that can be pulled out of the transmission. It should just have a c clip that keeps it in place, grab it with a pair of pliers and pop it out. You should be able to use your cv shaft now. This piece most likely just came out with your cv shaft when you pulled it and it stayed in the junkyard tranny.
