2004 Cavalier tranny noise - throwout bearing??
Saturday, November 20, 2010 2:43 PM
New to this forum, usually on s10forum, however my desperate friend has limited internet access and im trying to help him find out whats causing his tranny problem. He is having long term issues with his 2004 cavalier ls 2.2 ecotech, the tranny is making a grinding noise causing the throwout bearing to go out/lock up. When the cliutch is engaged it makes no noise, but when disengaged it makes the grinding noise. hes changed the throwout bearings twice already, problem keeps coming back . hes ready to buy another transmission but would rather not if its not necessary, and he would like to know if an easy and quick rebuild of his current tranny is possible. any help is appreciated. were stumped on what keeps casuing this. we just know the throwout bearing is locking up against the pressure plate. Please let me know if any additional info is needed on his cavy. Thanks

All we have is a stock throwout bearing.

So clutch pedal pushed in and it has a grinding noise?

thanks for the reply. when the clutch is pushed in no noise, when the clutch is let out thats when the noise is grinding, like a bearing or something. and its screwin up his tranny.

I think what your explaining is normal. So let's say your sitting at a stop sign car is in neutral clutch pedal is out all the way. Your foot is on the floor board. You are hearing a noise, and your not moving anything or doing anything. Correct?

If so your hearing some noise from the TB floating on the fingers of the pressure plate. As soon as you push the clutch in the noise stops?

Sometimes I can turn my A/C on and the noise will sort of stop also.

My car does this. I have come to believe that with a aftermarket pressure plate and clutch that the TB might not rest as close against the pressure plate fingers when not push in and allowing this noise.

i appreciate your reply and help, however we really dont think this is normal because it never did this from when he purchased the vehicle til now, it is an incredibly loud grinding noise. Its made him completely lose the ability to shift in the past if i remember correctly. its gotta be the clutch or throwout bearing, somethings either not fitting right or not installed right, just kinda hard to believe it happened again. thanks again
