So I have a 96 Sunfire GT. I recently drove it from Phoenix to Minnesota about 3 weeks after I bought it.
Car ran great but a couple days after the drive my 2nd gear is now giving me issues.
It will go into gear but when I let out of the clutch it pops out of gear. Every other gear works just fine though.
If I drive and skip 2nd gear it works perfectly fine and drives good, only 2nd gear gives me problem.
It seems to if it's not fully going into gear, I'm a motorcycle guy so I know motorcycle trannys but never have worked on a car trans
Please help me, I want to get this fixed, it's the only issue I have left to figure out.
I need to replace the rear main seal and front passenger wheel hub so I'd like to get this fixed while I do the rest
that happened to me to but i have a 2003 cavalier ls sport.
Might just be a small "kink" in the cable. Or maybe a blown out bushing in the shifter. Seems if all the other gears are OK then it may be the prob. Otherwise time for tranny work.

Supposedly this car just had the tranny rebuilt. There were receipts for the clutch and shift cables from checkers, but the tranny rebuild one is a bit sketchy looking.
From other stuff on this car, it looks like the guy was kind of lost when doing work so maybe he put it together wrong?
How is the shift from 3-4?
I have a getrag trans, but I would assume the fore aft motion of the shifter is the same....
I had a bad bushing on my fore aft cable, it wouldn't go into second, and it would barely feel like it engaged in fourth.
The whole thing felt like it was "shifted backwards", like I barely had to move it forward for 1-3-5, but I had to pull it ALL the way back for 2-4-r (2 not working mind you)
See if you can manually (on the trans) shift it into second, start the car and try driving. I did that first and it put my mind at ease cause it didn't pop out that time. If I put it in 2 with the shifter though it'd pop out when I let off the clutch.

All my other gears seem to work fine. I did have it pop out of reverse one time.
I will try the manually shifting into second and see if that works.
It does the same thing. It shifts into 2nd but pops out when I let the clutch out so hopefully that is all thats wrong with mine too
