Hey JBO,
I had to pull my motor because I blew it a long time ago... lol
Anywhoo, i pulled the motor and transmission with the subframe..
When I was installing the trans back on the new motor I accidently fumbled it and it landed where the shift linkages connect.. it didnt do much damage other than cracked one of the eyelets where one of the pins go through.
Fast forward to today when I first started it again and it now I cant get it to go into reverse.. All other gears work fine but the transmission itself just wont go into reverse. I think it seems to have a problem in the part of the linkage that moves up and down as in to go into reverse it has to go all the way down and it will not, I've tried to force it down with a prybar and it legit will not go down any further.
Now my question is 2 parts..
1. I dont know how the cables are supposed to be routed around in the engine bay, they are just kinda sitting on the rack and go to the trans, they dont mount anywhere except for the transmission. (They sit in the little holders on the trans) I'm doubting this is how it goes but i dont remember if they're supposed to mount somewhere more secure instead of just dangling in the engine bay?
2. Could have dropping on the linkage messed something up? Obviously I understand it "could" but all the other gears work great?
I've tried bleeding the clutch and there was no air in the line..I havent checked to see if the pressure plate is releasing ect. but I assume it is because all forward gears work fine... The roll pin does not seem to be broke on the trans linkage mount on the trans and the cables are not broke because when I disconnect them and pull they do not come out of the sheath..
Any Ideas would be appreciated..

if it goes into 5th ok then the shift rack is moving ok.
if it doesn't go into 5th then something is up with the shift rack when its moved that direction (pushing the stick sideways towards the driver).
if you are having the problem you're describing then 5th should be a problem gear also.. if it isn't, then something else is going on. Try disconnecting the cables on the transmission (just pop them off their ballsockets) and try to manually shift the gears on the transmission case by grabbing the arms. If it shifts ok when you er man-handle it but won't shift ok at the shifter then something is up with the cables.
It goes into fifth easy enough, it is slightly more difficult than the rest but they go into gear like butter,
When I have someone sit inside the car and try to put it into reverse I believe the conclusion I came with is that the part that is supposed to move vertical is not moving downward far enough to allow the trans in reverse, Does that make sense?

Even popping the cables off will not allow the vertical post to move down far enough.

well if thats the case it seems the selector on the trans was somehow damaged.
you could try adjusting the fore/aft cable to see if it'll sneak into reverse
if not, then its time to pull the selector section of the trans out and see whats up or swap in a new trans
Ok I messed with this again today and found that it is a problem with the side to side movement, It will go into reverse but I have to pry the lateral part over with a screwdriver and it doesnt go in easy at all.. tells me something is up with the trans. I'm just gonna buy another and cryo treat everything and get LSD.
