is my torque converter going/gone?
Friday, August 13, 2010 6:43 AM
My car is automatic and has the saab kit on it. I've had it boosted for around 2k miles. Get it on the dyno at the bash and I was hoping for decent numbers. Everything is going, then the numbers start showing. 134 whp, 120, 105... something is wrong. The guy who ran it stated the fact that my torque converter may be dying. I do not feel that I've abused my transmission and was wondering if anyone could chime in on symptoms/signs that's it done. There are other possible causes for this lack of power to the wheels, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't a tranny breakage. It doesn't feel the same power wise (I can tell the car doesn't move the way it did 2 months ago). Any help is appreciated!

Hey man, that sucks, Im not a tranny professional, but it sounds like it could be. Your TC does what its name says, take a little bit of energy and makes it a little more. Now dont quote me on that, but I think Im in the right direction. Goodluck tho. If it helps I have a 04 Ectoec tranny For sale now with TC, that ran great, 40k on it, and im in chicago. 200 is what im asking. Goodluck buddy!

It could possibly be the TC, but it could also be the tranny itself. Do you have a tranny cooler? If not get one, the fluid thins out when it gets hot and successive pulls will heat the fluid quick.

For right now, change the filter and fluid. Try B&M's Synthetic TrickShift. Also get that external tranny cooler.

If that doesn't fix it, look into getting a built tranny or rebuilding one. Raybestos makes the "Blue Plate Special" kit for the 4T40E. This is a performance/race rebuild kit, with higher friction coefficient frictions and steels that are much more durable. The shifting is still up to the PCM, so use HPT or a B&M ShiftPlus for performance shifting.

As for TCs, you can get one custom built ($$$), you might find one of the Yank 3000 stall TCs, or you can get a stock replacement/rebuilt unit. The stock replacements are available up to 2795 rpm stall. The stock units I've dealt with have been 2375rpm stall. If using a stock rebuild, use a reputable transmission shop and ask for a code FACB. This was used on a few cars with a 2.0L motor and had a 2795 stall speed with a carbon filled clutch.

More info can be found my thread Stock Torque Converters, 3 Speed Gears and more.

Thanks for the help guys. Mike I'm going to consider buying the transmission then building it. Madjack I'll try what you say first but from what I can tell and what another member who rode in my car have it down to the tc. If I get on it the tranny slips and such. My transmission still works fine, there's just no power. So I'm going to keep in contact with you for help on this topic. Thanks again!
