axle seal that goes into the transmission

i have to replace the seal due to my axle exploding and taking it out but i cant find anything to go around the outer diameter to seat it evenly and have currently installed one but its leaking.

what are you guys using socket wise or is there a seal kit a person can rent as this is getting frustrating as hell

Autozone may have one. I just replaced my drivers side axel and finally just gave up replacing the seals. Way easier with the tranny out but I ain't pullin that thing again anytime soon. I think the 36 MM fits around the center of the seal. Good luck, let me know if you find an easy way. LOL.

I just cut a 2x4 piece of wood, tapped the new seal with a malet, It was an easy install.

Key word being rubber, otheriwse you will damage the threads on the new axle when you are pounding on it

i don't know how that worked for you, i've spent the last 4 hours trying to get mine in and i've used everything from a rubber mallet to a 8lb hand sledge and it hasn't moved a mm closer

I ruined two seals trying to get them in with a rubber mallet and a 2x4 block of wood. I finally got the correct tool (my Dad is a GM mechanic) and it went in in less than 20 seconds.

yeah, i bought a seal installer/punch kit and should be super easy to do once i get to it. just put the proper size piece on the handle and then tap it into place with a rubber mallet/hammer

using the right tool for the job makes life so much easier opposed to trying to use sockets/tubing and anything else you can find

Yea, sometimes it pays (literally) to have the right tool. I ruined two axle seals (7 dollars each).

Sorry to hear that some seals were wasted. Just for me I don't spend cash for a seal install kit. I am too poor lol. Good to hear you got things back together.

Oh, no worries. This was like 8 months ago, not from your advice, lol. I can imagine it would have worked if I took my time and was gentle with it.

Good idea. May try that if I don't get the tool.
