Ticking from transfer case.
Friday, April 11, 2008 7:10 AM
I have a slight ticking sound coming from the transfer case when there is no load on the transmission. The noise comes when the car is moving and the car is in neutral, or if you get on it, then let off the throttle. As soon as you give it a little gas, the noise it gone.

The fluid was very low, and I filled it up, but Im wondering if you guys know what it could possibly be.

Ummm yea, transfer cases are only found on 4wd or awd vehicles. So there shouldnt be any sounds coming from it, cuz its not there.

well, if its your transmission its probably toast. It could be a throw-out bearing, but im willing to bet your transmission is toast. If you have an auto, your transmission is toast.

Thats what I thought too, until I heard a mechanic call it the transter case.

Its the rear part of the manual transmission where the cv axles connect to.

I believe that is/should be the differential case you are reffering to.

That woud be it.

But in a big note to self. Im never going to take the car back to that guy. If he does this for a living and calls major automotive parts by the wrong name, Thats not good.

I was 100% seriously going to type that earlier, but didn't want to seem like a dick! LMAO

Just to clairify, is it an automatic or manual transmission? You seems to be talking about a manual, but when i checked your regestry when i 1st posted you listed an automatic.

This is a manual.

I need to change my registry, as I now have a 98 Z with a 5-speed.

ya its a old post but tells the same story i have with the ticking....... manual transmission 96 sunfire gt. when i bought the car i was told the tranny and clutch had been replaced. i would assume it was a used tranny but would think they would atleast replace the clutch and all componites. car has 230 000 km

any fresh ideas on this issue, my first thought was throw out bearing.

thanks

If you hear the tick while moving, it is most likely the sound of your differential destroying itself. The teeth on the gears are actually slipping past each other, resulting in a loud "ticking noise." That is the most common, our Cavalier's are known for weak diffs.

Yup, the diff is dieing, mine is doing the same thing, and the last of the parts for my tranny build are on their way

u say loud ticking........ mine is a very quite ticking, it even doest it very lightly when in neutral at a stop. i would rather pull the tranny and replacethe clutch and tob, then the whole tranny. i have a guy that has about 25 to 35 sunfires and cavaliers. thats all he deals with. so i coud probably get a tranny cheap but i would rather not.

If it makes the noise not moving, it is NOT the differential. It sounds like it could be a TOB or maybe the input shaft bearing. Does the noise go away when you push in the clutch while in neutral?

yes it does, but when ur moving and u put ur foot on the clutch, it dosent go away it just gets really quite......its like it is speed and rpm sensitive. the ticking i hear when stopped sounds different then the noise i hear when moving. the ticking will driving just all of a sudden started. while the stopped in neutral sound has been there for a while............ just my luck its two different issues.

It sounds like you may have a bad input shaft bearing AND a bad throwout bearing.

When was the last time you checked your fluid level? I know it's a pain in the ass to check, and I'm guilty of not checking it often enough either.

thanks wagon wes, ur supoose to tell me something positive......haha and yes transporter i have checked the level and it is actually over filled. it sucks because ive only had the car for a couple of months, and when i got it the guy i bought it offf of said he had about 20,000 km on the tranny since he had it replaced. i guess the donor car didnt have a good tranny in it. ................................. this is the part were i bang my head off the wall........

ill have to do some investigating on the input shaft bearing, anyone had to replace one before. is it a external bearing or internal. as in splitting the tranny open for surgary.....

thanks guys

I hate to break the bad news but the input shaft is internal (I can't promise that's what it is though). I know it is frustrating, I have had my fair share of stupid problems with not only the Cavalier, but cars in general. It happens to all cars, regardless.
