Okay, what's going on is, I have a 2004 cavalier ecotec with 73K on it. Yesterday i was at a stop sign trying to get to work and when I went to pull out,. the clutch was stuck to the floor and I had to put my foot behind the pedal to pull it back up. Now this was the only time it did it on the way to work. On my way back it started again. This time it was worse. When I got home I checked the resevoir fluid and it was empty. I filled it back up to see if that's the problem and started to pump the clutch, but my friend said it was just spitting fluid back out. Well, with the car parked, it was in reverse with the e-brake on and as soon as you would start the car it would try to move in reverse??? Now, we are unsure what needs replaced. Would it be the master or slave?? I'm not sure what would cause the car to start to want to move in reverse when you push the clutch in to start the car. Any suggestions?? Thanks guys!
its spitting fluid back out of where? if its spitting it into the reservoir then its the master. if its leaking externally near the master, then its the master. if its leaking externally by the bell housing, its the slave. look for a line that is leaking too. i've heard of internal slave leaks too, but i don't quite understand what it does or how that works out, so idk how to check for it.
It is not an internal leak if your level is going down. Like Dave said, look for a leak. You should find one near the bellhousing or master cylinder (by the brake booster) or the line. My car did the SAME exact thing, it was the slave. Our slaves are known to be somewhat weak.
A new slave is like 100-120 bucks, so it is a good time to get a clutch if it looks the tiniest bit worn. A clutch is 300 ish, it's worth the extra 150 bucks to replace it while the transmission is out.
Is $425 reasonable to get this job done? if i had an extra vehicle I would do it myself but i do not and this is a time sensitive issue. that includes that part and labor.
That is a slave cylinder replacement only? The part is about 100, so that is 300 in labor. Average labor rate is 75/hour, so that is 4 hours labor (very cheap is like 50/hour). I would say most mechanics should be able to have the transmission out in about 1.5 hours and in within 2. So that is 3.5 hours. I would say that is a fair rate. You might find some places a little cheaper, like 350 total, but if you feel good with the shop it is worth the extra money to know they didn't cut corners.
been having this problem for a few months. replaced the master then the salve with the problem still present. just found the problem. it is the line, right where it comes out of the master and goes next to the harness connector it was rubbing on the metal bracket. there isnt alot of fluid missing but enough of a hole that the pedal is soft and dont hold pressure. got a line at a yard and problem is fixed.

This is exactly what is wrong with me as well. The slave looked fine as well as the master. When I put on my CAI that line that runs from the master to the slave must of been sitting right next to it and over time (2-3+ years) it finally puncture a pin hole in it and thus the problems started. Ordered a new line and waiting for it to come tomorrow. Should be good to go then!
I had an issue in my 03 where the plastic line burst near the slave. I believe there's wire loom over the line. For me the clutch went to the floor and stuck. I thought 04+ get a metal line though.
