Went on a trip the other day to my buddy and to party....3.half hour trip.Everythings going fine on the drive and it starts to pop out of 5th...i put it back in and it pops again so i drive in 4th for a while and go back to 5th...never pops.
So i'm driving back and it does it again....alot...so i drive in 4th most of the way...try 5th again and its all good.
Didn't pop out of 5th at all today....it popped out of 3rd and HARD.
When it was poping out of 5th i was driving normal...doing anywhere from 55-85 but it poped out of 3rd WOT nearing the redline going up the hill by my house today,my buddy was infront of me and i was trying to keep up.
I used to have the 5th popping problem with the last tranny in my car(old one ran out of fluid,5th stripped out, bent the rest. The clutch was fine as it was replaced about 20k ago.I know the last 3 owners, they all know how to drive and were not hard on it.
So whats my problem?
Car is a 97 2.2 btw.
The clutch does not have anything to do with it popping out of gear. It is an internal transmission problem, most likely shift forks or synchros. The only way to tell for sure is to tear it open. More than likely it will not get better, just worse.

This. Its gonna get expensive.
Same thing happened with mine it would pop out of 3rd and 5th it ended up being the blocker rings were shot so i bought reinforced ones from my local trans shop and i have a 97 2.2 with the isuzu trans btw

Why are you toping out third on a street that is maybe a 55 zone?
Sounds like you @!#$ up some synchros.

Alright it kept popping out of gear under hard acceleration at the track, milan, i pulled the dipstick out on the manual trans and there seemed to be brass on it, so i figured id drop the trans and check out the inside of it, it ended up being the blocker rings on the end of the syncro had teeth chewed up and missing, i went to my local trans shop, stated the vehicle 1997 cavalier with the isuzu 5 spd, they ordered reinforced blocker rings from one of there sellers i paid $32 for each gear, i installed them and have not had a problem with popping out of gear since
Erik Packard
$32 was for each blocker ring not the actual gear

32 per gear...damn...how had is it to change them?

You have to determine which ones are bad, but you have to have a set of snap ring pliers and rip apart the trans, if you open it up or if you pull your dipstick out and there is no problem with that, it may just be an out of place shift fork

One other unlikely possibility is the shift ball detent springs. I think they are like 40 dollars for the set of 4 from the dealer. It might be worth a try as you shouldn't have to pull the transmission out to replace them. Usually these springs don't go bad, but it does happen.
which dip stick...the only one i know of is for my oil.
and which springs?
The dipstick is at the back of your transmission look under your brake master cylinder its on the back of the transmission and the springs are on the the shift ball in the center console

no springs in my shifter....
No dipstick...prolly supposed to be one where the filler hole is...so i put some syncromesh in....almost 2 quarts actually till it over filled.
But now my clutch is chattering.

well that was probably why it was popping out of gear not having any fluid and you may have gotten water in there if not your lucky and need to cover that or it will just spill all that fluid back out find a dipstick or a plug and if you take apart the shifter there are springs that hold the shifter in a location
Erik Packard
i have a short shifter that i tightened up...
right on didnt know u had installed a short throw i also have done that i have a B&M that adjusts that way but have u put something over the hole and i would also watch that trans closely after it was drained of fluid that may have caused some internal damage, cork that hole off and then it may be fine it may not

The springs I was referring to are on the transmission, and those are the ones that hold you in gear. I have never seen a shifter than has springs on it to hold the gear. There are three bolts next to each other on the trans. They are like 1 inch apart, in a line. There is another one on top by the bellhousing.
page does not work....i think the fluid took care of the problem
but now my clutch is chattering...and makes a whiring noise when i let off the clutch...
It did this a long while ago and stopped,so i never payed any attention to it..

Sorry was thinking of the detent spring, for some reason i thought thats what you were talking about and i have never herd of those springs going bad, and you may also have to bleed your clutch master it may have air in it and thats why it may be chattering
Erik Packard
it stopped chattering...but still has a slight whir to it...
The chattering happens ever once in a while for a bit, then stops
