My car has 202k on it. It's been really hard to shift for while and now It won't go in gear it is permanently stuck in neutral. The clutch pedal works fine. Does anybody know what is causing this. I had the slave cylinder along with a new clutch since it was out anyway installed at 100k. I hope this is not what it is again.
Can you describe the problem in more detail? Does it go in with the car on and off? Does it make any noise when attempting to go into gear (on and off)? Can you have someone see if the cables are moving the little shafts on the transmission housing, or at least trying to move them?

It does not go in with the car on or off. I pulled the center console and didn't see anything but I will get somebody to look under the hood and let you know.
If you look under the hood and see them moving (which you probably won't) then disconnect the two shift cables at the trans and make sure they still move. If they do, your trans is probably wasted.
Looking under the hood the linkage is trying to move but it's just barely moving.

Maybe the slave cylinder again ?
Yea, I am sorry. I was thinking you JUST replaced it, not 100K ago. They can go bad in 100K for sure. I should have read your first post closer.
It could be your master or slave. To check, disconnect the line where it goes into the transmission. You kinda twist and pull at the same time. If you can push down the pedal fairly easily after this (don't force it, it can break if you push to hard) then your master is gone. If it stays solid, try replacing your slave. If you replace your slave, and it still shifts hard, get a new transmission.
I think I figure out my problem. I was yanking the shifter around just trying to get it to do something and the cable busted. I think the cable was already busted I just freed it loosed. I got both cables out and just need to get some more. BTW if anybody has to remove the cables you don't have to remove the bracket for the master cylinder to be able to get to the bracket that bolts the cables to the transmission and keeps them from dangling. I made this mistake and then still couldn't get to the bolt. All I had to do was remove the air intake pipe to get access to the bolt.

Good to hear! It is always a relief when you find out you aren't going to spend a bunch of time and money!

Yes it is. Thanks for the help. Does anybody know if only the 03-05 cable are the same or will cables from either earlier cars or cobalts fit ?
OK I just called the dealership and they said the cables will fit a 2000-2005 cavalier or sunfire. Now I just need to find somebody selling some preferably in the Dallas area but I will have them shipped.
