I'm going to swap engine for a 2.2 ecotec and I want to change the oil in the manual transmission. Any suggestions? Is royal purple syncromax good for that transmission?

I have not personally used it, but I have heard BAD things about the Royal Purple Synchromax (although their motor oil is very good). Just use the GM synchromesh and you will be all set.

Use OEM fluids only, the people that built it know better than anyone else what to put in it

How many quarts does the tranny take to be full?

The F23 getrag(ecotec 5-speed tranny) uses Dextron 3 ATF. Syncromesh is for the earlier Izuzu 5-speeds. Do not use syncromesh.

wrong, their oil sucks. their gear oil is good.

actually synchromesh works fine for the getrag. my cav went over 50K on synchromesh no issues what so ever, and when i do my lsd, synchromesh is going in again.

Dextron 3 ATF is the manufacturer's recommendation.

I would only use a ATF. I like Hurst synthic ATF, the B&M synthic ATF is ok as well. Both are much better than stock.

I use B&M trick shift non synthetic ATF and it's been fine for over 100k miles. I fill mine to 2 quarts because they call for 1.8 quarts. Works just fine.

Hey,

So just put Amsoil Signature series 5W-30 Synthetic oil. Cost me $65 for oil. I wanted to try the best and after research that is what I bought. I now want to use Amsoil Manual Transmission fluid instead of my valvoline. Just wanna make it clear, wanted to switch to a different fluid after 30 K. Valvoline worked fine.

Which transmission fluids for the F23 getrag is the best? And clue me again please, but I can use an ATF fluid in a manual transmission? its been over a year since the last post to this thread. What do you guys feel are the top fluids out there right now? Do I also have to use Dexron III fluid only or can it be IV? Don't use synchromesh, some say its fine..... Any opinions on the Amsoil ?

Thanks guys!

no idea why you guys feel the need to run special fluids in the trans can you accually tell me that you notice even on a dyno run any kind again on a 5spd trans to run a special oil in the transmission

i have GM manual transmission fluid in mine and put in about 2L and have had no issues think i paid 5 something for 2 litres

for what a 5spd is and the fact that theres no heat in it to break down the oil like an automatic would i would save your money

I was told by a GM mechanic to not run manual gear lube in a Getrag transmission. Said the tolerances were too tight to allow the fluid to flow. He show me in the GM service manual that it calls for 10w40 in the Isuzu transmission as well.

well just so you know ever 2000-2002 manual getrag came factory with the manual transmission fluid in the cars 2003+ they switched to ATF because the fluids are close enough and means less stock in assembly plants then only need 1 kind now

95-99 calls for syncromesh
00-02 called for manual trans fluid
03-05 calls for ATF
00-02 are now calling for ATF but it doesn't matter what you use

your manual trans fluid doesn't need anything special its just a lubricant. ATF is a lubricant and can handle heat better but manual transmissions don't get as hot as automatics
