Crappy Shifting Feel: Help plz
Saturday, August 29, 2009 4:26 PM
So i have had a Transmission rebuild already less than 6 months ago and i have never liked the way the "shifting" in my car feels...
sometimes it doesnt want to move smoothly and clean from 1st down to second..
sometimes i cant even get it to go into second and ill have to disengage the clutch while rolling and press it down again and try again...like pulling the shifter all the way to the left and then down to make it go in gear.
it feels loose...going up to 3rd... from 2nd... does not feel strong etc...
i dont know if this "feel" problem is Transmission or maybe it is the shifter? (shifting assembly)
but either way ive driven my friends Jetta and it feels like when you clutch it and move from 1st to 2nd...it almost WANTS to go to 2nd and it like jumps down there...it feels really good and the shifting just flows into the next gear...
the exact opposite of mine.

any tips or suggestions?

Check and make sure all the mounting points for the cables arent broken/loose/otherwise. Check the shifter under the console to make sure there arent worn bushings or o-rings that are bad. On mine the oring under the plastic circle clip (that holds the shifter down) was worn completely away. I replaced it with one i made to fit (from ACE) and it got much better.

The getrags are somewhat finnickey about shifting smoothly (least mine and a few others are). It shifts terribly compared to some cars.

does it grind at all?

it does not grind...it used to before i had my transmission rebuilt. haha...if that is what you were getting at?
so no grind...
but nothing is smooth...its wabbly...not firm or direct in where its going...
and sometimes again if feels as though it does not WANT to go into say 2nd from 1st or 3rd...

i will have to grab my manual and read up and then check the cables and all that...never dealt with that stuff before.

If you've had the trans rebuilt, Id say almost with 100% certainty that its a linkage issue. How many miles on the rebuild? on the car?

Ill try and take some pics of what im talking about tonight if i get a chance
