Speed sensor issue
Sunday, August 02, 2009 9:03 AM
I have a 98 cavalier convertible z24 automatic. The other day I was leaving to go to a car show and she wouldn't shift out of first. When I went back home I ran codes on it and got nothing. I also viewed pid's and when the car was moving there was no input from the speed senor. I have pretty much condemned the speed sensor but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Also does anyone have a location of the speed sensor on the trans?

The speed sensor is a small two wire plug (purple and yellow wires) that is located on the tranny near the back of the engine. Its the only plug like it back there on the trans, it shouldnt be that hard to find. I've seen the wires pull out of them before so give it a once over to make sure its still hooked up.
Short of that I'm no help I dont know the autos very well.

It is the speed sensor. I have disconnected one before on a auto and it would not switch out of first gear.

Well you should be able to assume that the speed sensor isn't working when your speedometer isn't moving. And the thing should very quickly figure out that your car is moving and there isn't an input which turns on the CEL.
