So on my lunch break I notice that my car really doesn't want to go into gear, and second poped out on me, but I figured the fluid was probably not up to temp. So I drive about 5 miles and gears start to get really hard to push in. Then second comleately dies on me, I try to let the clutch out at all and it will slip out of second. The synchros in all 5 gears must be gone because I have to rev match every gear or it won't even think about engaging.
This is my second Izuzu tranny that has died on me, the first one had a bearing blow up and locked both front wheels.
So my question is, will the 00-02 getrag tranny bolt up to my 98 Cavalier 2.4L, or do I have to keep using the Izuzu?
I'm really starting to hate these transmissions...

My bad, I went back to the seach again and finnally found my answer.

Ok I've read up and I just wan't confirmation on all this.
The Getrag F23 out of a 00-02 2.4L will bolt up to my 98 2.4L.
And the transmission mounts, drive shafts, and shift linkages are all the same right?

So I would need new drive shafts, the shift linkages out of a 00-02, and to fab up some custom mounts?

Clutch, flywheel, slave, and possibly master as well.
You didn't search very well. You need:
-Transmission
-Flywheel
-Clutch
-Throwout/Slave
-Master cylinder
-Rear Transmission Frame Mount
-Front and rear transmission mounts that bolt to the trans
-2 Bottles of ATF
Cut off old rear mount, measure up and weld up the new frame mount. Then bolt up trans with new clutch and flywheel and TOB/Slave. Install new master cylinder, bleed system, install old driveshafts.
You can't put it into ANY gear? How does the clutch pedal feel? Sounds to me like you have a bad master cylinder, or possibly the slave.

Thanks for the info.
It wont stay in second, just kicks it out when I let the clutch out, and none of the synchros are working, you have to rev match every gear, and 5th is especially bad. It's still driveable, you just have to skip second, and the transmission was starting to hum just as I rolled into my driveway, so it isn't going anywhere.
Got it up on jack stands, looks like I had a seal go bad, and it dumped almost all the oil out, so I started to take it apart, should have the transmission out by the end of the week, then I can asses the damage.
Not sure if it's worth fixing this one, or if I'd be better off swapping in a different one. All I know is GM likes making a killing on parts.

i got a isuzu tranny and/or spec stage 2 clutch for sale cheap if your interested im in ct. pm me.
Nah subframe is staying, it's the third tranny I've had to put in a cav, so it shouldn't me a problem.
Hardest part is finding a replacement tranny, there are pretty much none up here.

Well it's out and on the engine stand... looks like this nut came loose and allowed the input shaft to slide towards the engine, which took out the bearing, and dumped oil all over my pressure plate. I'm hoping none of the oil made it to the clutch.
Also talked to a family friend who's a mechanic, and he's stumped as to how that nut would come loose. Transmission has never been cracked open to my knowledge.
That's as far as I got yesterday, lets hope I don't find any other damage on the inside.
As of now plans are to buy a rebuild kit and new synchros from drivetrain.com

Do they have transmissions from an Isuzu Sylus or Geo Storm in your area?
Just a thought.

The I-Mark and Stylus run the MK7 transmission also, as does the Metro iirc. Don't know if the Metro was Chevrolized with a cast diff though. There was a Storm at a local pull-a-part close by that I should have snagged the tranny for the differential, but I don't even drive my car that hard to begin with. Would have been good to sell though.
Jesus, I just checked the pull-a-part inventory and there are five Storms there. Need to go sometime in the future to pull an entire dash out anyway.
Well looks like I lucked out, the bad bearing looks like it ruined the input shaft, but I have another so I can just swap them out.
And the other thing we found was a VERY worn out diff, but, I also have a second one of those, just have to swap ring gears
Just ordered new synchros and a rebuild kit that has everything but the gears and shafts, so I should be all set. Coming from Vegas so lets hope it will move its ass and get here quick.
All in all only $300 for the kit and synchros, over $200 less than a used replacement, and I'm ending up with a pretty much brand new tranny, so I'd say things worked out.
I'll have to take a look to see if they have either of those cars, don't think I'll need it but it would be good to know.

^^^^^ Good luck... Im planning on rebuilding the one thats in my car aslo once I get a replacement in there.
And I thought that you had to replace to linkage and shifter also in the swap you where talking about earlier.

2.4 is MK7, 2.2 is MJ1.

Hi, please confirm that information, I red on another site that 2.4 is MJ1 and 2.2 is MK7, GM.com sent an email with information that 97 Z24 uses MJ1 trans. Confirm me. Thanks.
Transporter7220 wrote:2.4 is MK7, 2.2 is MJ1.
Actually it's the other way around... MJ1 is the Isuzu 5-speed transmission that came with the 2.4L (I just checked my 98 Z24 spare tire cover, the sticker has the RPO codes on it)... and the MK7 must be the 2.2L.
Here's a question for everyone, will an Izusu tranny from a later model Z24 or Fire GT fit a 95 Sunfire GT with 2.3
Thanks,
George
